Wonderful collection of captures Val; certainly a bird I've never seen.
Looks like a guy w/attitude though based on my favorites #'s 2 & 4 - outstanding!

I have not seen this bird around me yet. I live in socal as well. I will keep a look out. I doubt I will get pics as sharp with the 70-200 though just because I would have to be so close that he would fly away. I would need to crop at 100% and that would clearly degrade the sharpness. How far away were you from him?

Side note I just reserved a copy of this lens for the weekend. It is a rather large lens, thank god I have been lifting weights for the last 16 years. The push pull feature is a little weird to get used to as well. If I like it may grab it and return my 70-200.

My Gear: 6D, 7D, EOS-M w EF-M 22 f2 STM and EF-M 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS STM, 17-40L f4, 24-70L f2.8, 100 f2.8 non-IS macro, 70-200L f/4 IS, 400L f5.6,, Canon 1.4x II TC, Canon Speedlite 430 EX II, Better Beamer.
