i am behaving and saving all my pennies in hopes of receiving the 70-200 soon. my husbands nephew came into town this weekend and asked if i would take a few pics at his 12 year olds hockey game. i tried to explain to him I DO NOT have the equipment for this but he did not care so this is what i came up with. i will mention that the lines on the ice are practically non existent at the area.

Arena shooting with less than optimal lighting is a challange at the best of times. These are nice pictures considering most arena lighting and limited equipment. Well done.

You did as well as you could have done with the resources you have. I'm looking forward to see what you can do with the proper lens.

limited to say the least. my only option was a 50mm 1.8 shot through the glass. i was wondering tho, why with the lighting being flourescent do the pics have a red tinge to them, well they do on my monitor anyhow. i honestly was surprised they were clear at all. this are very cropped from the originals.

id better be extra good cos i really really want that 70-200 f2.8. there was a fellow at the arena with one and i spent the whole morning having lens envy

Lisa, Good job considering what equipment you have available. You might be able to get a few closer shots with the 50 f1.8 if you get behind the goalie or near the goal line. Try to "Time" the shot and hopefully you'll come away with a few keepers! ;)

Oh, and keep savin' those pennies for the 70-200 f2.8. It's a great lens and really helps out!

RAW and CWB off something. Lighting varies from side to side a lot in these arenas & the ice might have a color cast besides. If you anticipate taking a lot of shots in one area, I'd try to use a white piece of paper (brighter than a gray card) & set a cwb as close to that area as I could. Then plan on adjusting the others in post processing.

Those are nice shots; why would anyone laugh?

You know, a convertor on that lens would probably not be a horrible way to go. I'm not about to recommend not getting the 70-200mm, though!

thank you for all the words of encouragement. First let me apologize for all the pissing and moaning for the lack of "proper equipment". To a certain extent I feel like its putting the cart b4 the horse. It was the first time I had my Rebel in an arena but I really do want to learn how to do this. I mostly take portraits so this is entirely new to me. I want to thank everyone for the pointers and I will be back in the arena again soon, even with my 50mm til I get something I am happy with.
THANK YOU!!!!!!
