OK, I've had my 70-200 f4 for over a year now (bought new) and the IS is very noticable when it is working. I guess you could call it a grinding noise. I thought it was normal. I just bought a 70-200 IS II f2.8 when they went on sale b/f xmas. The IS on the new lens is very quiet. I now plan to sell the f4 but I'm worried it may be defective and I certainly don't want to sell a defective lens. Is the noise on the f4 normal?

Yes, normal. Mine makes the same grinding noise. I got mine off of a guy who bought the 70-200 IS II f2.8. He showed me how quiet its IS is compared to the F4 IS. Your findings sound about right.

I believe it is defective, if you want to dump it I can take it off your hands and will be sure to get it fixed.

It is just an older version of IS. It's nothing to worry about. You will also find that it takes a little longer to kick in than the new 70-200 mk2

It's amazing how one of these threads manages to pop up at least once a week. Oh, and yes it's normal.

Lol, exactly what I thought when I saw it. There need to a public service announcement on here or something :)

IS on the f4 is extremely loud. It's just the f4's thing. On the plus side you always know hen is on

Actually that is a good idea. On the lens forum there should be a sticky:

"YES, IS IS LOUD!"
