I will be traveling to Colorado next week and want to get some daytime long exposures of creeks, water, etc. To do this, I would need a ND filter, correct?

Any recommendations? It appears that there are quite a few options to chose from...

Yes you will need ND filter in order to slow down the shutter speed for silky water look. I use Hoya. Just make sure you buy top of the line and nothing cheap.

The least expensive you want to go would be the Marumi DHG line. Poor quality creates color cast and sharpness issues. If you have more, go for Hoya or B+W.

Get one for your largest diameter lens and use step down rings to put them on others. This will keep you from having to buy different sizes.

Would this one be considered "top of the line?"

Make sure you know roughly what fstop/shutter combination you expect to use. Different ND filters have different exposure adjustments. This one is 9 stops worth. So if you're doing a landscape and you want to shoot at f16 at iso 100 in daylight your looking at roughly 8 seconds with this filter. That's great for something where you want that realy smooth water effect. But if you were wanting to use it to knock down the sunlight to a fill so you can use your flash as the key light on outdoor portraits, it could cause problems.

I would go with Lee ND and add a GND filter as well.

Depending on what lens(es) you have and intend to use an ND filter one route might be better than the other. Since all my L zooms have a 77mm filter thread I just buy and use B+W ND Filters. Typically the 3, 6, and 10 stop ones are the most popular.

I will most likely only be using the filter on my 24-70.
