One thing we have a lot of in the pacific NW is mushrooms. I took tons of photos of these guys on a recent hike and this one is my favorite.

IMAGE: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7155/6591695719_c1f3b5ae1e_b.jpg

Panasonic DMC-FZ40 (I know, not a canon - but I'm in the market for one :)
Exposure 0.067 sec (1/15)
Aperture f/4.4
Focal Length 82.7 mm, 400mm effective focal length
ISO Speed 400
Exposure Bias -1 EV
Flash Off, Did not fire
Tripod

PP was in iphoto - lightened, a little saturation, sharpening and crop.

I'm a complete newbie and am looking for general comments and particularly regarding the composition - would you crop differently? Is it interesting?

Thanks!

The crop isn't too bad....a touch of fill light would help bring out the detail in the log end and the stems of the two main mushrooms.

Great shot, love mushroom pictures. I am so jealous of them, I never run into them here.

Nice subject. If I had my druthers, I'd stop down the aperture so as to get that little fellow on the left and the orange fungi in focus. This is where a carbon fiber field tripod can make your day.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.

I agree a little fill under the stems would have been nice. I didn't think of this at the time. Would a sheet of white card stock placed at the right angle been enough light or would I need to use flash? (Of course it is hard to tell if you weren't there, but a guess?)

I did use a tripod - not carbon fiber, but a decent old SLIK I picked up used. Next time I will try a smaller aperature to get a greater DOF. At the time I took the shot, it all looked in focus on my LCD screen.

Without actually being there and seeing the light....it is hard to tell how much a reflector would have helped. Certainly worth a try if you don't happen to have a flash available.

In my view, the only thing the LCD is good for is the histogram and the blinkies. I never trust it to determine focus. Been disappointed too many times.

I had on camera flash, but didn't think to use it at the time. Also, with the camera I was using, I don't believe the flash is adjustable manually so it is all or nothing.

I think they are spiderwebs that I didn't notice while shooting. They aren't bad in this shot, but so often I miss those little things that ruin a photo. I need to learn to open my eyes.
