Canon 60D Users, Unite! (3)

As a follow up to Keyan's points, can I ask a somewhat related question?

When you use a Nikon DSLR does it take you some time to figure out where things are? Just things in general. When shopping for a new camera, I was initially drooling over the D7000, and I thought, well it is just a bit more than the 60D. Well, as many times as I held it in my hands, fit issue aside, I could not figure out how things worked. With the 60D, everything made sense, and did not take me long to decide on it. Looking at the Nikon, by comparison, i could not even understand how to move the focus points around, let alone do more complex things. As for the menus, that was another area that looked fairly dated, and not very clear. I will be the first to admit that my complete lack of experience with Nikon DSLRs contributed to this feeling. Nevertheless, I really wanted to like the camera but just could not get over the initial apprehension of not understanding it. Just my two drachmas worth of opinion and (frustrated) experience.

Wait for actual head to head testing of the final production models. Everyone is freaking out about the specs of both cameras, but so far there have been no actual reviews of final production models, so you can't make a good judgement at all. Megapixels aren't everything, ironically that's the mantra Nikon kept for so long, and now this generation the tables are reversed.

If the market won't sustain the pricing Canon will drop it. IMHO all of their new stuff is VERY highly priced, from the lenses to the flash to the 5D3.

I have never shot a Nikon, but I have heard your comments from others too.

The really interesting part is that when it comes to actually taking pictures, the 60D does just about as well as the D7000, and actually excels in some of the metering and and Auto ISO applications, and is better on center point focus.

Personally I find the dual wheel ergonomics of the XXD and up EOS cameras to be very natural and extremely quick and intuitive to use. The Nikon button layout particularly around the shutter release seems to be very odd.

Well, it's pretty obvious that before making a final choice we'll wait for real tests and RAW files. But, as for what we know right now, the extra 500$ is the part I don't like. Think I'll invet in the 24-70 mkII before.

AAH, we have nearly fallen to the bottom of the page! Too many pointless threads about the 5D3!

Oh here's a pic, the room was completely dark except for two eyeball lights over the mantle, sadly this pic lost a lot of sharpness in the resize and compression, but the AF Assist on the 430 plus my 17-55 = completely black dog in focus in a dark room that now looks like it is well lit.

anyone knows how many years the XXD upgrade based on history?

Hmmm, 1-2 year. XXXD models update every year.

I believe the average is 18 months. Which would make it about now. However with two new major releases in the 1D X and the 5D3 I'm thinking it will be more like two years or maybe even a little longer for the 60D, not sure but the T3i might also stick around a little longer however they have refreshed those annually.

I don't really feel much of a need to upgrade my body at all, I'll skip this generation for sure and then decide if I want to jump up two or get into whatever iteration of the 7D is out in 2-3 years.

there has not been consistency for a few yrs. the 20D to 30D to 40D was about a 2 yr cycle.

Nikon came out with the D300 just after the EOS 40D and so Canon responded with the 50D just 1 yr after releasing the 40D.

The 60D was about 2 yrs after the 50D.

I have to disagree, David. I think continuous lighting has a lot to be said for it,especially for someone is in new at studio lighting. Continuous lighting is cheaper and lets you see exactly how the lighting works on the subject.

It's entirely possible to light portraits with 2-4 home depot reflectors and hi-wattage bulbs. We did it for years.

The downside is that continuous lighting is hot and bright which makes the subject squint. This is not the problem with a speedlight or strobe. Other than that, I would argue that you can't do any better with one than you can the other.

It sure is possible, but once you've figured things out, you'll know it's not powerful enough. Hitting F8 at ISO 100 might be impossible. That or your model will sweat and bake in front of you because of the heat.

You sure could use ISO 400~800, but what's the point in a studio? You want crystal clear pictures, not noise. Also, blowing a background out to pure white will be a pain and not very effective. With only two speedlight you'll be able to do 3/4 body shots easily.

Last thing to think of is resale value. Flashes/strobe hold their value and sell quickly. Not so for a set of continous light.

Yeah, I don't feel any body upgrade is going to make me a better portraiture photographer if I already have the 60D. Photo studios still use 30D's, etc... it an experience thing, not a body thing.
I'm now expanding my gear with speedlites, etc. Truly a whole new world for me. New lingo, huge learning curve. Lighting is something I never cared about before because 95% of my shooting is wildlife or outdoors making the best of whatever natural light is there.

Thanks guyz. If FF will never make an articulated screen I'll stick to crop sensor and will lean towards investing more on L lenses. I'm am hoping for a DIGIC 5 on the next xxD and put back MF adjustment. Better High ISO performance then I'll upgrade.

I'm sure there will be t4i before the year is out, the rebels seem to be updated yearly
