I think something's wrong with your copy.

I just duplicated your "tests" on my copy of that lens (which I absolutely love, btw - except for baseball games, that's the lens that I default to on what ever body I'm using) - and I wouldn't be happy were I you.

My focus ring is well dampened, but it's dead silent.
And when I shake it - again, silent.

RMA/return it would be my advice.

Woooooo, got my new iPad! Since I'm at my sister's for the weekend I didn't feel like dragging out the laptop, so I gave processing/posting from the iPad a try for yesterdays's photo. Nothing special about the photo, but the pp workflow was pretty slick. Taken with the 60D, transferred with the camera connection kit, processed in iPhoto.

Nice pic. I also picked up an iPad 3...open item at best buy so it was 10% off, was never set up and barely opnened...and now Apple is going to replace it with a new one, there is a spot in the glass that won't go away.
