I think it is the make up, powder tends to stop light getting thru so you end up looking pale, its why you see photos of woman with make up on and their faces are white but have a tanned neck as you don't apply powder to the neck etc.

Depends on the makeup as well. Some are great for photos, others are not.

Yip but mostly it depends on whether they used a setting powder and how heavy handed the person is (it sets liquid and cream foundations) or if they used a simple powdered foundation and if the make up artist uses other powders for highlighting and shading, blush etc.

So, my neighbor decided to store an old couch plus some plants in our hallway. She's nuts. Had to test out my bounce card skillz. As you can see, flare abounded. Also, disregard the reflection of that person in the window. I think it was a passerby.

Im thinking of maybe getting a 5D3 in the next couple of months. I know its better than the 60D. I really like the focusing system and the FPS as well. I've always wanted a 5D2 but the 5D3 blows it out of the water its like a 5D2 and 7D made a baby and then some.

I would keep the 60D and sell my XS if it is even worth anything anymore
BUT
I can't drop 10 grand right off the bat for all these lenses either (I currently have around 1,500 saved up) . So I was thinking as much as I lust for one, I kind of want the 24mm f/1.4L and will want to replace my 10-22mm for the 16-35mm f/2.8L so I can have a better low light ultra wide angel plus it can still be used on the 60D if need be. Id also want the Tronix XT3 (a power pack to take my studio lights outdoors).

DECISIONS:

24mm f/1.4L
Tronix XT3
Beauty Dish
LP-E6 (second battery for the 60D grip)
16-35mm f/2.8L (selling my 10-22mm and paying the difference which would be around $600)

OR

5D3 (body only)

which should all equal to around $3,500

Hi Guys,

i just got my 60D around a month or 2 ago and then signed up for this forum. always wanted to have an DSLR but couldn't afford one and when i had the money, jumped right in and became trigger happy! :) very happy with the purchase but having trouble with some photos, guess need to learn some more. Read countless tutorials and how to's already and if you can share some good ones, please do :)

anyways, i tried to take some sunset photos yesterday and it was an epic fail, i think because we were on a hill but it is the only place i could think of an open space where i can see the sunset.. C&C most welcome, any help will be good, and advice please :D

tried to get the star effect of the sun but couldn't get it.. epic fail!

Congrats on the 60D you will enjoy it!
I would start by reading Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera" if you haven't already.
I think it will answer some questions you have on why your pics didn't turn out the way you would have liked. I noticed from the exif info that it looks like you're just trying anything to get it to work. You really need to have an understanding of what you are going for so you know what settings to use to achieve that. Are you shooting in RAW or JPG and what are using for editing software?

@basketballfreak6: I like the composition in all of the photos, you could have framed the arch better in No. 1. We need to always be aware of the background.

Each person has a face half which is pretier than the other half. You have to snap a couple of quick portraits of the girl (since normally it's her that you wish to hoghlight in the photo) to decide which one is the desirable half. Then you compose the photos to have the pretty half showing.

If the girl is a bit chubby (or wears flowing clothes like this one), try to avoid full frontal (or back) exposure. You don't want to have you client showing like the backside of a bus!

I like the railroad photo where half the body is showing for this reason. A nice trick.

Congratulations for an all around nice shoot.

Thanks todd! I've read the book already but couldn't remember much on which aperture and ss to use. What i remembered mostly is the brother blue sky etc. and to use the smallest? Aperture available.. I couldn't get it to work then that's why i tried every option but still failed.. Lol! Also ive read some tips after trying the sunset shots and mostly they are teaching me to underexpose the shot about 2/3 to 1 stop.. Might try to do that and read the chapter on understandig exposure about light.. XD

Oh and as of now, i only shoot jpg, and i dont use any software for editing.. My computer at the moment cant handle editing.. Planning to buy a mac soon though..

Well one comment I have would be to read it again and try to retain the information as it will only help you in many ways. Lets take the last shot in the set... f/11 was fine for that shot and even iso 100 will work...were you on a tripod ? Because at 1/50 and 1/25 for the 3rd shot and hand held, that may just be your problem.

Here's an example:
this was shot on a tripod
Exposure 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture f/11.0

Ooohhhhh! Nice! :)

I dont have a tripod yet, still saving up for the 055xprob/498rc2 combo as i think that is the most popular but still deciding to save a bit and go with the 190.. :)

And yeah, i'll deffinitely read the book again.. Oh how i want to improve in photography but still a lot of learning to do :)
