day 12 of my 365+1 project

IMAGE: http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac198/basketballfreak6/003-2-1.jpg

damn body decides to wake up 5am in the morning (went to bed at 2am) and saw this beautiful sky outside my window (this colour only lasted like 10 mins), while pretty it also frustrated me that I wasn't at say Dicky Beach again to capture the seascape along with this sky, shot with 500D + Sigma 30mm 1.4 square crop and noise added via Lightroom 4 beta

i know it's not the 60D, but I sent it off for servicing yesterday so this will have to do for now :P

I'd save my money and go with the Sigma. ~$600-700 used vs $1000-1100 used for the Canon.

Trouble is finding a used one! Haha

Saw that one earlier today, look around the hood connection. Looks very beat up and wondering what the other side of the lens looks like since he didn't take pictures of the opposite side.

The filter appears to be the glass that is shattered, but once I turned the on the light, you should be able to see taht one of the inner elements is completely detached and moving freely inside of the lens. The filter glass is broken and the front element has now been lodged into the filter ring, that's the reason I wasn't able to get the filter ring off.

Neither the zoom ring nor focus rings will move. I believe the entire lens is no longer round, as the hood won't even come off. The lens is destroyed.

Nick, I know this wont make you feel any better but if you have a free moment in your lifetime go sign up to CloudyNights, ICEinspace or Astromart and do a Forum search for "UPS TELESCOPE DISASTER". Over the years I have heard Story, upon Story, upon Story of $5K-$10K Refractors (similar in size to a 70-200 2.8 with a hood extended) being destroyed by the UPS guys. They pay those packagers minimum wage, work them to death and have timelines that noone would work under.

I don't want to turn this post into a UPS hater post, but.. I haven't shipped or used UPS in over 5+ years and EVERYONE I personally know who is into high end optical gear be it Telescopes, Lenses etc refuses to ship or receive anything via UPS. Its FEDEX Express or BUST... quite literally.

Chin up brother, a smoking deal on a new lens will come your way soon enough :)

Mr Babel_fish...

As a former Fedex package handler with friends working at UPS doing the same thing, I can state quite firmly that both Fedex and UPS treat packages the same. Our war stories match up very well! One thing to note...there's no such thing as "fragile" unless you want to insure it. All packages are treated the same. Other than size, shape, weight limits, or hazmat, all packages are handled by automated sorting equipment which can be quite brutal to poorly packed items. If it's not packed sufficiently to withstand a 10' drop to a concrete floor or having 500# of other packages stacked on top of it, the odds of being damaged in transit increases dramatically!

While I respect your judgement, I reserve comment for another thread as I said I dont want to muddy our fine thread up with "war stories" from the front line of "part time $5/hr package handlers"...

Ah I searched for 24-70 HSM so that one didn't come up but there are not many used ones on ebay. I'm debating whether or not to just buy a new one local.

It dosnt come up because it's mistitled and the acronym HSM isnt bedded in searchable text... Auctions like these are where your gonna find a deal. :)
