I've had a 7D. It was "ok." I wasn't so happy with the image quality and post processing needs/time. I was happy with the AF and FPS, however.

I've never used a 1D. I am not a pro but high quality equipment, photos, etc are important to me. I am bothered by a soft pic, poor color and light transitions, etc.

I have a 5Dii and am very happy with it, the build, the IQ, the AF doesn't seem to annoy me, of course I rarely shoot in low light with the outer points, but maybe I would if I was confident in sharp AF from the 5Dii....

I want a second body mainly as a backup but one that will compliment my 5Dii, not just make it redundant.

I don't need a camera today or tomorrow. Should I wait for the 1Div and also hope I am one of the lucky ones who gets an order in? Or should I just get a 7D?

Feel free to discuss the difference between the 7D and 1Div regarding image quality, AF, time value of money, price difference, RAW PP, virtues of a patient mind, probability of securing a 1Div in the near future vs having a 7D now, etc.

I'm impatient too, but I don't think the 7D will satisfy you at all. I think you should go ahead and try and purchase a 1DmIV. The 7D is a fast camera and has a really great AF system, but in terms of IQ and the amount of processing necessary to get decent files - the camera is underwhelming. Be patient! Though your 5Dm2 would likely become your backup...

I wasn't very happy with the 7D either, which is why I no longer have one. The IQ was just never as good as I thought it should be IMO. As far as a backup to a Mark II, depends on what you are going to use it for. There's no comparison between IQ of Mark IV and 7D, 7D is not even in the same conversation. The Mark IV is out there new between $4500 and $4700 if you look hard enough. I would get a Mark III before I bought another 7D, if for nothing but IQ alone. I don't know how much high ISO shooting you do, but it's well documented that the 7D doesn't handle it even as well as say a D7000. Long story short, hold out for the Mark IV, you'll just end up frustrated and be right back here again.

I agree, for the most part. And high ISO performance is not something you want to test with a 7D. You'll definitely not be happy with the amount of noise reduction that you'll have to apply to your images. Some people may be fine with it, and that's cool. But if IQ is really a high priority, as you say it is, the 7D will leave you more frustrated than anything else. Hold out for what you know you really want.

Your answer is 1dmarkIII. If you have the money, sure, wait for the 1dx. What is it? A $7k body??? That's some backup camera you will have there...:)

I can't justify 7K for a 1Dx, I will just see what life is like in a year before I go there....

Have you checked out the mini-review I did between the 7D and 1D4? I do back to back exact exposure tests at different ISOs, and also show the FOV differences at different FLs, etc.

The 1D4 beats out anything in Canon's arsenal at this time though, and it is more all the other features that make me keep it over a 7D, even considering the $3K price difference. I like having 5 custom WB slots, multiple file slots to store complete configurations, 10fps is nice once in a while (I use this much less than I did years ago), etc. Better AF, better ISO, sharper images, etc are great too. :)

You had a 7D and there is a reason you no longer have that camera. You shouldn't get it again because the result will be the same. Go for the 1Dm4.

Between having quality time with the 7D to learn its nuances and the variations that seem to exist out there between different 7D bodies, I simply wouldn't agree. The results could very well be different with a different body and a desire to learn how to use it to its fullest. It is the best all-around APS-C crop body TO DATE, bar none. Get a good copy or send yours into Canon for calibration, then learn and shoot.

You know what you want, 1dmkiv. Wait and it'll appear in the refurb store, and then buy it.

^+1 Seems pretty clear that you have already decided what you want. Nothing wrong with that.
