I am a fairly light user of GIMP and DPP. I have a problem on my hands that I am trying to figure out, but just cannot quite make it work. I know there are several professional Post Processing people on this forum, so I am reaching out for some help!

Problem: In the attached photo, there is a branch/limb that I focused through to get this shot of an Eastern Phoebe. It is not that noticeable in the shot, but it takes away from the birds face. I would like to process the branch out of the photo.

Can anyone help? Please give a step by step of how it was done. It would be nice to see it done in GIMP, but if it is done in Photoshop, maybe I can make it work.

Thanks!

By the way...The file size is very small so I'm not sure that it will be of great quality. I'm new to posting pictures, so I am not sure how everyone gets around the small limitations for file uploads.

It would definitely help to post a larger image!

You can do this from Flickr so that the image quality/size can be retained. Resize the original to the POTN max, which is 1024 pixels at the widest dimension, upload it to Flickr, then Flickr has "sharing" tools to embed the link to the image here.

For uploading to here from your computer, then yeah, you have the 150KB file limitation. I typically set something like 900 pixels as my widest dimension and a jpeg Quality setting at 4/40 or so, but you have to do a bit of trial and error.

But for something like this where you are asking for editing help of some detail then you really want the largest size that POTN allows, which points to using Flickr.

Or, you can also upload your original file, jpeg or Raw, to a "sharing" site such as YouSendIt.com. Give your email address as the "Recipient" and upload the file and they will email you a notification which contains a link. Post the link here and folks can download the full-size file. These services are free for single-file uploads/downloads.

Here is a start just to get things rolling. It will be more challenging when it is bigger.

Photoshop.

It's called the Clone tool. And you really need to practice for yourself. I or others can do it for you but you don't really learn anything since you didn't do the work. Like most editing techniques, cloning takes practice. Zoom in on the area you want to work on, click your clone tool, and practice...and be patient.
