I have the oldest version of Canon’s 100mm macro, and always manual focus and use it with flash and/or a tripod. I was wondering how good the “L” version is, I wonder if it is worth it to upgrade.

How many when doing macro use AF only, rather than manual focus, to focus on their subject? If you do use the AF for macro, how well does this lens work for AF only while doing macro?

How good is it for hand holding with the Image Stabilizing, instead of using a tripod or flash?

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

I just got the L for Christmas. The wife has the non L. From my few hours of playing with it, the 100L is an excellent lens. IMHO, the L with IS is worth it. Remember that good lenses, unlike camera bodies, can last a lifetime. So put the money into glass first. I will llikely upgrade her to the L version later this year.

As to using AF or IS....depends on what and where you are shooting. If scenario allows for a tripod, by all means, use it and turn IS off. Of course leave IS on for hand held. AF is OK if the selected point is where you want the focus to be based. If not, turn AF off and go to manual..and maybe use live view.

As for flash, be sure to bounce it off a reflector or something else as a direct flash can bleach out the subject and render it very flat.

I upgraded, it was worth it for the IS alone.
