I see (on craigslist locally) a Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II for $250, a great price. Evidently the reason is bc the lens is 5 years old. Should I steer clear?

sure, why not? if it's been taken care of there is no reason it should be faulty. try it out.

Why not?
Three years ago I bought a 1999 300/2.8 Non IS.
If the lens is functioning as it should be, age of the lens has nothing to do with it.

I have a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 which is about four years old. It looks a bit battered and bruised, it's had a hard life but works perfectly.
