I always have to open EOS Utility myself, nothing is set to run automatically although there is a dialogue box that asks what I want to do that does appear without my having to do anything.

The card reader insists on opening a file with "100" at the start, then a sequence of numbers. I'd like it to stick with the _IMG_xxxx numbering system that the direct USB cable defaults to but have been unable to make it do so. Believe me I've tried.

Run EOS Utility. (with camera NOT connected via direct cable)
Click on "Preferences" at the bottom of the main screen.
Click "OK" at the message about settings without camera connected.
Click on the "File Name" tab at the top
Click on the top Drop-Down list box, and select "Prefix + Number" option
Configure the File Prefix to "IMG" or whatever you want, and set the number of digits you want for the sequential counts, below.
Click "OK"

and you should be set. You only need to do this once.

Old Baldy,

I will try what you suggest and thanks for taking time to spell it out.

The fact remains that I'm happy with the speed of the USB upload direct from camera, but you are are real saint for setting it out as you have.

I have learned more from reading everyone's experiences that I would from the manual. I am enjoying this input!

Unfortunately, noone seems to have known that your Mac comes with Apple software that uploads pictures from your camera, and that you never needed to install the Canon stuff at all. All these PC guys guessing at answers.

In Finder, open the Applications folder and then double-click on Image Capture.

Had you never installed the Canon software Image Capture would have just started up when you plugged the camera in and turned it on. You may need to switch the camera to "PTP". If Image Capture does not autostart, you may need to go into its preferences and set that.

I'd suggest that all "these PC guys" (and some Mac guys) were trying to help the Mac user answer his OP, which was how to get the EOS Utility to work, to transfer the images. That question was answered.

That question was answered.

...by explaining how to get EOS Utility to copy from a card reader, which you'd have him go out and buy.

That would be up to him now, wouldn't it? Maybe he wants to use the EOS Utility, as it may provide him additional functionality that core Mac importers don't.....but that wasm't the question, was it?

Anyway, your response/information was useful, I'm sure, regardless of the somewhat sarcastic tone. Good for you....

Greetings and Happy New Year!

I just purchased my first Canon, it is a T3i; I have previously used Nikon's. The T3i seems like a fantastic camera; however, I am unable to download anything without getting a "Camera Not Connected" error message. I have downloaded the software to twi different Macintosh computers (Macbook Pro and an iMac) and have the same results.

Any thoughts?

I have an iMac 27 inch Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b) and an Canon 1DX, both top of the line and they can't link. The Utility crashes when I try. Seems Canon and Apple are not on speaking terms. I belong to a large camera club and before I feed the newsletter, ,I want to know if any one has a solution out there

I'm using Windows, so I don't see your problem, of course. Just to check - have you downloaded the last update to the software from the internet, or are you trying to use the one on a DVD in the box?
Sometimes they publish updates on Canon's web sites to solve issues like this one.

You are running Lion which is an older version of the mac operating system (2 versions behind) and is not "top of the line". What version of EOS Utility are you running? Version 2.14? According to the Canon website, version 2.14 should work on OSX 10.7.

Personally I would update to OSX Mavericks since it is a free update.
