Awesome, can't wait to go we'll be on the big island in a little over a month, and the Lava shots are my first priority. Can you tell us what lens you used, how was the water for taking these shots?

I used a 24-105mm f/4.0 on one camera and a 70-200 f/2.8 on the other. The shooting can be tough, though, because of the swells.

So glad you posted these! I'll be there in may, and am hoping to get on one of these tours to see it up close. What company did you go with?

I used Lava Ocean Adventures in the Hilo area and highly recommend them. But you should check the volcanic activity updates for Volcanos National Park before booking. The lava doesn't always flow all the way to the ocean. In fact, it had not reached the ocean for about nine months from March to about mid-December. Timing is everything. And it's not easy to get photos from a rocking boat in low light, so make sure you're willing to risk getting skunked, photo-wise. Even so, the experience is well worth it!

Thanks everyone. I am trying to get back there at the end of February to shoot again from a boat and will share any decent ones I get -- assuming the flows are still reaching the ocean. It was tough shooting but I think I can do better.

Very nice! Hard to pick favorites, but I think I like the first two most. The lines of the lava against the background are great.

Thanks, Paul. The first one is my favorite, too, primarily because I like the composition. If you want to see more, go to http://www.rwgimple.com …leries/Kilauea/index.html (external link)
