Hello all,Happy 2012.I came across this cool video on some macro water bead shots that were really cool.He linked all his gear on this page.I have a tripod and lightstand for off camera flash with the cactus triggers. But i dont own a macro lense. My head on my tripod doesnt lock into the position he used either.Looking at my gear as far as lenses could i get similar results ?or do you have to own a macro lense?

Watch the video if you have time.Really interesting.Cant afford any new lenses after gettting that beast 70-200.So if i have to wait so be it.

I guess my questions are:(1)Can i get similar results with my setup?
Any recommendations on a good starter macro lense for later when im not cash strapped?

Thanks for any/all advice.Enjoy the new year!

They allow you to focus more closely to something, which in turn will get you a higher magnification at any given focal length. The drawback is that you'll not be able to get infinity focus while the tube(s) is/are mounted.

ETA: They go between your lens and camera body.

If you are on a budget then get the extension tubes or a Canon 500D Close-up Lens. It's basically a filter that goes on the end of a lens allows the lens to focus closer. It can be used on your 70-200mm

I would just buy a true macro lens though. They are just great fun to have.

You're welcome.

I (along with MANY others) have chosen to buy a macro lens. There are advantages, not the least of wich is that it's a stellar lens.

But to start with, I'd go with what kawi_200 said. Pick up some tubes or the screw in 500D (which works well) to see if you like shootng Macro first. Much, much less expensive.

if you plan on using it for other things than just the water drop example...picking up a true macro lens is always the way to go...

your original question seemed like buying a new lens wasn't an option since you mentioned cash strapped...and wanted to know if you could accomplish it with what you have...

cheapest way to get those water drop shots is to buy a reversing ring to reverse your 50mm onto one of your other lenses...next step up at a little over $100 are the extension tubes...are they the best options...no, but they'd get the job done

Yeah, you wont be able to focus to infinity, but with macro work [for video] i doubt you would need to focus to infinity.

I have used the kenko extension tube with my 70-200mm 2.8 IS II for almost a year, and they do a really decent job. Definitely pic them up if you can't afford a macro lens at this time.

But start saving up for the 100mm L 2.8. Just got one recently and I am blown away with this lens.
