7D - Limiting auto ISO

New to the 7D - and I have a question, searching so far has not yielded anything.

If I leave ISO on auto - is there a way for me to limit how high it goes? I like the idea of automagically bringing it down when light is abundant, but I seem to end up with a disproportionate number of shots at very high ISO as light drops - I would much prefer to drop shutter or aperture (depending on mode) beyond a certain point. I can set the ISO manually, but wondered if there was a feature I was missing.

Lots to learn on this beast, but loving it so far.

Thanks

Jim

It's a while since I used a 7D, but I wouldn't think you could limit how high the ISO goes. That would kind of defeat the "Auto" part.
Instead of Auto ISO, why not use Av or Tv and set the ISO then adjust the aperture or shutter speed accordingly to whatever mode you're in.

No; the 7D doesn't have that sort of control. You'd be better off picking an ISO, running Av/Tv to adjust shutter or aperture (as appropriate per mode) and then boosting ISO manually if you just can't get a good exposure.

If you could limit the ISO, then the camera would just start underexposing when it reached that limit. That's no better for noise.

I think he is doing this for video [yet im not sure] and when you change the aperature or the shutter speed, the changes would be very dramatic and noticable in the video.

Thanks for the responses - it exactly as I figured. I'll persist in using other methods.

I like auto ISO - I was just trying to limit it to 800 or 1600 - I was getting alot of 3200 iso shots, which is a bit higher than optimal.

Thanks for the read.

my 60d has auto ISO limit. I do exactly what you describe.
I have it set to 1600. So, when Im shooting manual and I see the exposure meter drop down below the middle I just open the aperature more or drop the shutter speed to compensate.

I shoot wildlife and birds so speed is essential as I may only have 2 seconds to get a shot.
I also need to keep my shutter speed high to stop motion and need a specific aperture to get the DOF I want. But I dont mind letting my ISO wander up to 1600 if it gets darker out or if i have to shoot into a tree.

Curious that the 60D has this, but the 7D does not... I agree, it would be useful...

There's no user-selectable ISO limit on the 7d, unfortunately.

Not sure if this came along with the firmware update or not but there is in fact an auto ISO limit setting on the 7D.

Menu
joystick to 3rd red menu
ISO Auto can be set to Max: 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400

Yep, it's a new feature in V2.x... it didn't exist at the time of this thread...
