After using my new 7D three times and for about 240 shots, the shutter quit working. Needless to say, I'm not happy with Canon, but my local camera store (one of Canada's larger chains) is going to swap it for a brand new one and send the clunker back because I bought their extended warrantee. The worst part of the story is that I was with my Nikon shooting buddy at the time. What a drag. Does the 7D have a reputation for failed shutters?

I have two high mileage 7Ds with no problems, I don't recall seeing many posts with 7d shutter fails. Good luck with the new one.

Have not heard of this before, no. Haven't had any shutter issues with mine so far...probably 5k+ shots, to date.

Good luck with the new unit!

Just unlucky, these things can happen, i wouldnt worry about your Nikon buddy too much either, its a camera, much like the one he was holding, it takes pictures.

bannedPermanent ban

There is great variation between all DSLR shutters
and that "non warranty" durability # is just marketing crap.
Funny how so many belive its based on some factual data.

"Another dead 7D" is the title of your thread. So does this also mean that you had a previous dead 7D?

I just had a 7D with about 50K on the shutter that gave me an Error 30. Sent it in to CPS and it was fixed in a few days. Problem was a loose screw on the shutter mechanism.

Don't worry about it too much, these things are like cars. Parts need to be retightened, lubed, etc.

Thinking about it, I'd be more concerned that the retailer was only going to return it to Canon and give you a new one because you had an extended warranty.
I'm assuming that you've had it for less than 12 months with that small amount of use, so there should have been no issue in returning it and getting a replacement if the shutter had died.

If that's their policy, I'd be considering a different retailer in future.

You know, this reminds me of when one of my Honda motorcycles broke down, I was out riding with a bunch of Harley owners.

I have to say that as far as I know, the 7D doesn't have a reputation for premature shutter failure, in fact yours is the first I heard of.

"Another dead 7D" is the title of your thread. So does this also mean that you had a previous dead 7D?

I'd also like to know what the impetus of this thread title was. ??????
