Here are a few from the Marshall Lions and Paris Tigers match up last night. Our girls made a valiant effort but were unable to defeat the Tigers, losing 80-36.
All were shot with the Canon 20D and the 85mm/1.8.

Good shots liza! Where would we be without the jolly old 85mm f/1.8? ;)

Looks like the Marshall girls were under pressure in all these shots - so, with my limited knowledge of hoops, I can see that it must have been a tough game for them.

The lighting looks to be reasonably good as well... maybe we can swap venues one day? I've posted some hoops pics here: http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=113092 as you'll see from the first shot, sodium vapour lamps are a joy to work with

Do you have any shots of the girls in and around the bucket?

Once again, nice work... this basketball mullarkey isn't easy.

---- Gavin

Liza, these are great! I had been debating shooting Duke ladies basketball this year. I had been waffling - but I think I will make the call that I will go ahead and do them. Thanks for posting... really nice stuff.

Good stuff Liza! I need to add an 85mm f/1.8 to my kit -- of course I'll then have to learn how to use it but I'll probably never get results this good  .

Thanks everyone for your comments! I've really been working on the sports shots and was reasonably pleased with these.
Gavin-
Yes, this was a terrible first game for our girls. The population of that town is three times the size of ours, so they have more students to choose from in terms of players. Their team is always very good. The shots I have from under the basket were a bit disappointing, so I didn't post them. The ones you posted from Essex are fantastic!
The lighting in this gym was actually pretty lousy. They upgraded recently but bought cheap lighting. It's still fairly dark, so I was shooting at 1600 and, at times, 3200. I'm very familiar with poor lighting, as our own school upgraded from the sodium vapor lights just this past summer for the first time since the gym was built in the 1960's.

Croasdail,
Glad to hear that you're going to shoot Duke. I'd like to shoot some college basketball and am working on a media pass from the local newspaper since I'm a regular contributor.

I would recommend the 85mm 1.8 lens to anyone who shoots basketball in venues with challenging lighting conditions. After you become accustomed to the focus, it's great! And, Joey, the 50mm 1.8 isn't a bad lens for under the hoop shots where the 85 is a bit too long. I played with it and the 100mm lens alternately last night just to get some practice from different angles. Shoot on Av with your lens wide open to get some nice background blur. You can raise the ISO speed to increase the shutter speed, thereby eliminating blur. The shutter should be around 1/500 or above to freeze motion.

Thanks again for all your comments!

Great shots Liza, Very clean, and good color. The lighting at this venue is very good, that helps, Of course the 85mm rocks as a basketball lens. Keep-um coming

Thanks! I love that 85mm lens.
Our gym lighting at home is much better than this, so I'm looking forward to shooting our first girls' home game on Friday! :)

These are superb! That's great how you are able to get a couple or more players in frame, and still blur out the background. Very nice, and I know it's not easy, especially since I use a 2.8 zoom.

And how did the 100 f2.0 do? I have been looking at that lens simply because the spot I found I like to shoot VB could use a little more lenght at that spot, and the 135 f2.0 I have is too much. It would be oh so cool if someone would actually come up with an f1.8 70-200 zoom.....

Excellent shots. I bought the 85 1.8 for just this purpose. Just wish I had bought it during volleyball season. I have been strugling with the 2.8's and they really are inadequate for low light shooting. Thanks for sharing, you got me pumped to shoot our 1st game on Friday night.

Thanks guys! This was the first time I'd shot basketball with the 20D and actually knew what I was doing. I just got the camera last spring at the end of basketball season and didn't quite know my way around the controls yet. Since then I've become very comfortable with the camera and have acquired another lens or two (or three).

drisley-
You're right. It's very difficult to get the focus just right with the 85mm. I'm really struggling with it, but am hoping to improve as the season progresses.

Croasdail-
I actually like the 100 f/2 for gym sports. I've not had any trouble with it in low light and have found the extra focal length to come in handy at times. I know what you mean about having a zoom like that. Wish it were possible.

rklepper-
I'll be thinking of you on Friday as we're both shooting our first home games. Looking forward to seeing your shots!
