Wait for 5D3 or go for the 2?

Hello all,

I am really itching to upgrade to full frame. I plan to sell my EF-S lenses and my 50D to help offset the cost of a new body (maybe a kit). With the rumors of the 5D3 floating around, should I just wait it out until it's released or at least an official spec sheet? That being said, I don't absolutely need a new body right away, but I am compulsive, haha! Or just pull the trigger on a 5D2?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Nick

You may have a long, long, long wait for the 5D3, so if you can afford a 2 now go for it now.

You could be knocked down by a bus before the 5D3 comes out.

Prices of the 5D2 have started to creep down. Because of that I decided a month ago to exchange my old 30D for a new 5D2 and I'm happy with that decision.

Before that I had decided I wanted the 1Ds3 or its replacement, but after being invited to the Canon promo event for the 1Dx & listening to the comments being made about the 1Ds line, I made a decision in favour of the 5D2.

Yes, it's always going to be the case that rumours will circulate about the "next" camera, but be realistic, how long are you prepared to wait and will a 5D3 be what you wanted when it does eventually appear? I'm a great believer in the old saying "A bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush".

Rather than wait for a fictional 5d3, have a careful look at the 5D2 compared to a used 1Ds3. The latter will flood the market when the 1Dx is released and while in theory it is the same 21.1MP, the sensor and processor are in fact different & allegedly better.

If you're prepared to wait out the year and you're ready for the initial price shock (maybe around $3500?), wait it out and avoid any buses .

Sensible side says:
If you don't need to upgrade then why bother. At least wait until after CES to make a decision.

Compulsive side says:
Buy now while prices are cheap! Your not going to get a 5D3 for $2k anytime soon like you can the 5D2.

The 5Dm2 is an amazing camera. The 5Dm3 is a myth. I'd say go for it. I'd have a hard time believing you'd be disappointed.

Me? I'm waiting for that touch screen iMac to go along with my 6Dm4. I hear its going to have a 54mp sensor and 400 point AF!

I was puzzling the same question, went for it. Do it, you won't be disappointed and the Mk III won't be around for about a year from now or more as the first run of Mk III cameras with potential bugs clear the system.

And who knows - by the time the 5Dm3 comes around, the 1DsM3 might be around the $3000 mark, which would make that camera a pretty good buy with the 1Dx being on the market. Depending on what exactly ends up happening with the 5D, I might end up going that direction.

The 5D3 isnt even announced yet and it will likely not be available for many months even after it is. Plus, it will likely be AT LEAST $1200 more than the 5D2 is going for right now even if it were available tomorrow.

I say if you have the $$$ now and you want/need it now, go for it. If not, there's no reason to be worried about an upgrade anyway.

I'd say go for the 5dII now. If the rumors, which yes I know they are rumors, are true it will not be all that much different than the II. Maybe faster. Even if it is different you could sell your II and buy a III, yeah may cost a little more but you dont have to wait to get your FF. I do not wait well, when it comes to new toys!

If you want the 5DMkII then buy it . No need to wait for a camera that doesn't exist.

As above, why wait for a camera thats not even been announced yet, its all rumors, speculation. Get a MKII and if a mythical mk3 comes or whatever it will be called comes out, it doesnt mean that your 5DMKII will all of a sudden be useless at taking pics.

Totally agreed. The 5Dm2 is an amazing camera. In terms of DSLR's, its probably one of the worlds top 5. So a new 5D comes out someday (maybe). So you'll only be shooting with one of the worlds top 10 DSLR's. You'll still be taking great pictures, right?
