So, my wife picked up a backdrop kit for me off of Amazon, and it seems pretty nice. It came with two 20'x20' backdrops (black and white), but the top cross bar is only 12' wide.

I've been trying to figure out what I want to do - either get new backdrops that work with the stands I have, or cut them in half and have two 10'x20's... what would you do?

(Edited to add -- There was some miscommunication, they're really 10x20' muslins, and the only 'cut' I would make to the muslin may have been to the center of the pocket , but I wont even be doing that).

Do not cut them in half.

If you don't need the whole width, fold it in half.

If you need the whole width, all you need is one more light stand and a piece of 1/2" conduit to span the distance.

How do I fold it in half if the bar goes through the top of the muslin? (something I probably should have mentioned I suppose, :( )

You cut a slit in the back of the rod pocket at the halfway point.

Yeah, that makes alot of sense (I was thinking of doing something like that)... luckily, I may have been outright mistaken. She just sent me the link, and it looks like it includes 10x20', not 20x20'. That makes things a little easier, I suppose.

I'll update when I actually have it in hand... thanks all! :)

I use clamps when the sleeve is not going to work. Also, for my stand the cross bar comes in 3 foot sections I have to assemble together. So to make my 10(ish) foot cross bar into a 20(ish) foot I simply bought more sections. I had to drill a hole in one section I place in the middle and added another stand to support the center.

Don't cut your muslin, use clamps as suggested. Large muslins also look nice when draped and you make a pattern with the folds -- swayed/curved sideways for example. You can then sidelight the folds to give them texture if that suits the subject. A large muslin like that IS heavy, depending on the quality of the fabric, so hopefully your stand is sturdy. Also, if you are hoping to make the muslin wrinkle free, you will need extra clamps to run down the side of the stands, pulling from both the sides and the top of the bar.

Thanks for the tips everyone, very useful :)

If they are in fact 10x20, not sure if they'll even be wide enough to reach the ends of the stands (the crossbar is ~12' from what I'm reading but is in 4 sections). I dont plan on doing any real high-key/white seamless stuff, so maybe that's the way to go to get texture out of the muslin (only using 3 sections).

Mine are 10 x 20 also...is the pocket not on the 10" end? I roll the full 20" out for greenscreen but fold it back on top of itself for portrait work. I keep the black on the crossbar to minimize light spill through to the green and just use dollar-store clamps to attach the green or white muslin in front of the black.

Ankle weights from Wal-Mart to anchor the base of the stands and you're all set!

Does this seem like a possible workaround?
