Obviously this is not unexpected, but still sad... at least for an ole film guy.

In 1980 such a thing would have been unthinkable. It was almost as if they had a monopoly on imaging technology.

Sad but probably avoidable if they had changed with the times and produced what the market wanted now, not what it wanted then.

The passing of an era.

Sad to see a giant like Kodak headed this way. Household word for decades. Too many dinosaurs running that company me thinks.

It is sad, but businesses evolve and grow if they are to survive. Some companies have evolved and prospered (AT&T), others have not (A&P)

Kodak is the only corporation I would have helped bailout in 2008.

Seriously, their only profitable division is chemicals, which I believe has been sold off, and film.

That being said, I will be stocking up on Kodak. I'm down to half a brick of Tmax 400. I've always loved Tmax p3200, Ektachrome, E100VS and the Portra series.

I don't think their film division will disappear completely. They will continue to do what they do best; make analog film. Just not as much.

They are going through the motions of filing in case they need to go through bankruptcy. They are still trying to sell their patent portfolio. Stock tanked to 47 cents a share and of course I am in for 3700 shares and yes I am down but there's still a chance for some kind of pop in the price should good news change the direction even if temporarily. If it dies on the vine I can still write it off none of which would have happened had I been in Vegas and left the casino empty handed.

Kodak is an interesting study how changes in technology can bring down a company, even if they realize the changes early on.

Kodak was a pioneer in digital photography - remember those Nikon cameras converted to digital? They were also the first to work on sensor design and even today there are many cameras running on Kodak sensors. They tried hard to make it in the digital age, but they were just too big to turn the ship around fast enough.

The fact is that they did a lot of things right - even though everyone thinks otherwise.

I sure hope they can get through Chapter 11 and come out stronger than before. I would miss all their great film (and some of their chemicals)

Classic case of myopic management with heads buried in the sand. They easily could have positioned themselves for a bright future, but instead banked on being the dominant player in a declining industry. Unfortunately, consumer film declined much faster than their plan called for, which caught them out. They banked an awful lot on their commercial printing side on a press called Prosper, which should have been great but just hasn't lived up to the hype yet, and that was the big gamble that was "all in" for EK.

Wish them well, and hope they survive, but it's not looking that good at the moment.

I better stock up on film lol.

I hope they downsize and continue to make film, paper, and chemicals. Quit making cheap cameras please, the camera phone has KILLED that market anyways!
