4x4 / 4x5.6 filters?

Hey guys! I'm getting a matte box for video soon and the matte box says I can use 4x4 or 4x5.6 filters. It's to my understanding that 4x4 ones are much cheaper than 4x5.6 filters, but will there be much of a difference, like if I use a UWA?

Anyway, the main question is... must I really buy Lee filters? Granted they might be the best in quality (schneider filters too) but I don't have the moolah for it yet. Was thinking of Cokin or Hitech, but I can't find any info on whether or not they are 4" (100mm) or not.

Also, this is only for video use. I have a Hoya 77mm ND8 too but I don't like to keep swapping out the ND's, and a matte box makes sense too especially if I want to make my camera look bigger for the paying clients.

Any help here would be hot!

I wouldn't go lower than Hitech personally.

The 4x5 and 4x6 filters are grads or other filters where you want to adjust the placement within the image. For solid filters, which you want to cover the whole image, you only need 4x4s. Cokin filters aren't all that pure or consistent with their colours.

Makes sense, I can get a few full NDs with 4x4. What I do know is that most other rectangular ones for photo use are 4x6 but for matte boxes and video needs, we need 4x5.6 and I'm completely stumped as to what options I have

I doubt you "need" 4x5.6" mattes. Most 4x4 holders are open-ended so you can slide the larger filters around to adjust them. Or can you provide a link to what you're getting?

I think what the 4x5.6" frame is intended for is use with mattes, masking off part of the scene for double-exposures and the like in video. You'd want to use the 4x4 space for filters and it doesn't look like you'd be able to use larger filters with that particular holder/frame.
