I like DPP. It has been always my favourite raw converter. However I was sometimes frustrated because it doesn't offer the possibility to have selective area editing (or local editing).
So I started few weeks ago, to think about the problem and how I can add this feature to DPP through the DPP++ plugin. And I think I have found a solution.
Usually, software that allow local editing, work in the following way :
1. select a given area of the pic
2. apply specific editing parameters (contrast, color saturation, etc.) to this area.
Since I don't have the source code of DPP, it was not possible to do things in the same way. However I had another idea : why not invert the 2 previous step ?
1. create in DPP different conversions for the same pic
2. specify in which area of the pic each conversion has to be applied
and it works ! Thanks to this new feature, I'm completely rediscovering some of my raw files that I thought were bad shots.
As an example, I took a pic where it was not possible to have both the sky and the ground well exposed. Then I defined 2 conversions :
. one for the ground (the sky is blown out in this first conversion) and
. another conversion for the sky using the linear mode (the ground is underexposed in this conversion)
Then using the new DPP++ extension I just defined an area where to apply the sky conversion and the final result seems very nice.
There is still some (lot of) development work, but you can find some first video previews that show how this new extension works at the beginning of this message.
