See these videos to know why... (external link)

I like DPP. It has been always my favourite raw converter. However I was sometimes frustrated because it doesn't offer the possibility to have selective area editing (or local editing).
So I started few weeks ago, to think about the problem and how I can add this feature to DPP through the DPP++ plugin. And I think I have found a solution.

Usually, software that allow local editing, work in the following way :
1. select a given area of the pic
2. apply specific editing parameters (contrast, color saturation, etc.) to this area.

Since I don't have the source code of DPP, it was not possible to do things in the same way. However I had another idea : why not invert the 2 previous step ?

1. create in DPP different conversions for the same pic
2. specify in which area of the pic each conversion has to be applied

and it works ! Thanks to this new feature, I'm completely rediscovering some of my raw files that I thought were bad shots.

As an example, I took a pic where it was not possible to have both the sky and the ground well exposed. Then I defined 2 conversions :
. one for the ground (the sky is blown out in this first conversion) and
. another conversion for the sky using the linear mode (the ground is underexposed in this conversion)

Then using the new DPP++ extension I just defined an area where to apply the sky conversion and the final result seems very nice.

There is still some (lot of) development work, but you can find some first video previews that show how this new extension works at the beginning of this message.

Very interesting. I didn't even know that there were plugins for DPP. I looked at the current version and it actually has just what I wanted from DPP. I really need to visit this forum more often. Bon travail!

yb98 has authored some nice stuff -- check out his links in his sig.

Also, you might check out his thread on "DPP Threads" in the FAQ on this sub-forum page -- here's the thread:

Sounds fantastic, Yves. If it works well, there should be a lot of people who will pay for this.

Thanks Tzalman. Indeed I'm myself quite impressed by the result. As I said I'm rediscovering old raw shots that I thought were bad.
This is the main reason why I always shoot in RAW. I know that with new software and algorithms, it is possible to rediscover old photos in a complete different way because RAW files contain more information than some current software can really render in an easy way.

Wow, nice! The only other thing would be would it be possible to change/alter the way sharpening is done in DPP to make the sharpening not suck so bad? ^_^
