Bad idea or great idea? I'd expect about $160-$170 return on those two lenses. So, that means the Tamron would be around $450-500 in the end, or so? (Tax and all that)

How good is the Tamron in that price range and area then? The faster the better but zooms generally don't go below f2.8 from what I see. Having 17mm and the narrow ranges is good for me. (I like portraits but also like wider shots because I can't do everything from a distance)

The non-VC model is actually better, and is currently only $415 on Amazon. That being said, I would sell the kit lens and keep the 50. The non-VC model is cheaper, and would be a nice fast walkaround, but you would still have the 50 for portrait and low light work. So after selling the kit lens for about $70, the Tammy 17-50 would only cost you $345. But you could also go for a used model on the here to make it even cheaper. That's my $0.02.

+1, the 50 is nice to have around in addition. I would keep it if you afford it and go for the non-vc.

What they said. I skipped the 18-55 kit lens and only got my T2i body, then went and got a 17-50 Non VC. Also, Tamron is sharp wide open, but I find it sharpest at f/4, so if you need a nice low light/portrait, the 50 would be a good lens to have around as Raylon stated. Get rid of kit lens and upgrade to a good condition, used Non-VC, while keeping 50.

Yeah go for it.
When I got my canon 17-55mm, i had no more use for my 50mm lens and got tired of it not doing anything, so I sold it for $100

I used to own the non-VC version of this lens and it was fantastic! You'll really notice the difference in moving from the kit lens to this constant f2.8 lens. My copy was sharp wide open and pictures were great. The AF is noisy and there is no FTM but other than that it was amazing.

I agree with other responses. Get the non-VC version to save money and keep your 50mm. :)

Get the non-VC or get Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS (faster AF and image stabilization, same IQ). Skip VC.

What 50mm do you have ? I used to have Nifty and grew to hate it. The focus was slow and very inconsistent in low light, and the manual focusing ring was pretty useless. I get more consistent results with an old MF lens.

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-vc is good if you don't need the "VC" but I would also keep the 50mm 1.8, having a large aperture prime is useful

Look at my sig... I originally bought the T2i kit, returned it for the T3i body only and got the tamron 17-50 nonVC and I also have the 50 1.8 as well.

From personal experience it makes for a VERY good low budget combo. I ended up getting my tamron on amazon for $425 new, sometimes I want to upgrade to a 24-70 but used these lenses I've seen go for $295-$350 shipped, but in all honestly I'm not willing to take a loss and realistically I need to keep this until I decide to go full frame.

the nonVC is a great performer. I originally bought the 70-200F4 non IS and recently upgraded to the IS only because I do alot of video for my kids plays. However I still video with the 17-50 nonVC and everything is fine because the focal length is short, alot easier to hold still.

highly recommend a used ~$300-350 nonVC and KEEP your 50. I've taken over 11k photos with this combo, you can't go wrong.

I'll second, third, fourth? the Tamron 17-50mm non VC or if you are set on an imaged stabalized lens, get the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 OS. Can't go wrong with either.

6D, 5D, 7Dii, Eos R and too many lenses, flashes and aux. gear to list!
