I have seen several references to spraying a protective coat on prints. E.g., Inkpress sells a spray, and Moab recommends one for one of its papers (I forget which). I have never used one. Any experience with pros or cons? I use a dye-based printer (Pixma Pro 9000 II) if that is relevant.

thanks

I wouldn't recommend spraying a liquid laminate on top of dye based ink as the ink is not water resistant and will run. Ideally you should be using pigment or latex based inks which are water resistant and offer greater fade resistance. I have had mixed results with liquid laminates and so far have found that clearstar gives the best results. If you can try to avoid applying laminate with a hand roller as it is very easy to create bubbles and streaks, I find using a spraygun gives much better results :) I guess the other option would be to look at a hot press.

Using the acrylic spray prevents most of the ink from running. Products like Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic are acrylic based.

While I, personally, have not used Krylon on inkjet prints, I certainly have experience in spraying Krylon protective sprays on conventional photographic prints, and my father used to use it on his charcoal charictures.

From Mastering Digital Printing by Harald Johnson, "Coating brands that have developed followings with digital printers include the following: Clearstar ClearShield and ClearJet (clearstarcorp.com) Superfrog Frog Juice (superfrog.com) Lyson Print Guard (Lyson.com), Bulldog Ultra Coating (bulldogproducts.com) Liquitex Solivar varnish, Krylon Crystal Clear, UV-CLear acrylic sprays, and Sureguard (perfectiondistruibuting.com), and Lacquer-Mat (Lacquer-mat.com) photo lacquers."

I've looked into this myself recently, and sought advice. Pretty much everybody seems to recommend the Premier print spray.

Edit: (But I am using pigment inks).

My lab offers this and I did try myself a long time ago and did a crap job of it. So if I know I want this I spend the small amount they charge. I'm not sure of the exact product the apply.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Probably attributed to the fact that that slave-driving Pekka has these poor guys working 48-hour shifts with no sleep. But I hear the pay, benefits, and retirement package are great! ;)
