I have the Tamron 28-75 and love it. Most of my pictures are taken around the long end of this lens. I do want something wider for landscapes. I was looking at the Tamron 17-50 because of some of the reviews, but I would like some suggestions. I need to stay under $500.

grab a canon 20mm 2.8 prime! or if u need the zoom, sigma makes a 10-20mm. If it's for landscapes, more or less you're gonna stop it down to atleast 7.1 so it should be pretty sharp.

I've got a suggestion, take the money limiter out of the picture - which wide angle would you choose?

I used to have the Sigma 10-20 on my 40D and it was my favourite lens. Its built like a tank and all of the photo's I took with it were very sharp. Mine even spent some time submerged in a bog after nasty gust of wind decided to take my camera and tripod for a flying lesson. After drying it off it worked perfectly without any issues...this thing is tough and I had an excellent sharp copy.

Can't recommend it enough.

Well, u haven't told us what camera u got? From what i have read, Tamron 17-50 is no good for a FF camera like 5D MII. Too much vignetting at the wider end. It should be good for crop. I was looking into that for my 5D MII. Later on, I went with samyang 14mm ultra wide one. It is really good but it is manual. If you have a crop, Tamron should do u good at such an excellent price.

Buy used. There are several crop zooms out there.

The Tokina 11-16 is the one I prefer.

I've never seen one under $500 used though.

Welcome to the forum Brian. :)
Maybe a used wide angle like this one. Or a used Sigma 10-20mm. Either one fits your budget and produces good image quality. I bought mine 10-22mm used from another member here too.

I think the Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 would match up well with what you have. I love mine!

I think you can get most of these under $500. The Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 is a perfect lens for a crop sensor camera. Maybe find it for $350 on Craigslist. You just need to keep a steady hand and you'll be amazed at how well it performs.

In this order.
1. Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f2.8 XR (NON-VC)
2. Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR
3. Canon EF 20-35mm f2.8L
4. Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4

5. I've seen the Tokina 11-16 F2.8 show up for $500-550 in places. Love that one too.

I have the 17-50mm f/2.8 and I have the 10-20mm Sigma on my T2i, the 17 gets good capture, but if you want wide, the Sigma catches a lot more in the shot. My copy is sharp, but I have to say the Tamron is a sharper lens out of the 2.

The OP already has the Tamron 28-75mm; that is why I suggested the UWA.
