I have no personal experience with using a reversed 50mm for macros. But I think I can see some confusion occuring in this thread.

From what I can see Croesus is talking about mounting the reversed 50mm to the front of the integrated lens on his compact camera. This means that he does not need to worry about the apeture on the 50mm, as he can adjust it on his primary lens. This is also how the strong magnification is achieved on his ballpoint shots as the magnification of the reversed 50mm is multiplied by the magnification of his zoom lens.

tiziano on the other hand, from the adaptor he pointed to on eBay, is mounting the reversed 50mm directly to his EOS camera body, with no other lenses involved. Therefore he needs to be able to manually adjust the apeture on the 50mm lens as this is the only apeture control that he has.

Have I understood this correctly?

Ohh.. yes thanks for clarifying Woodsie. It's my mistake; I had a look at the adapter he linked to and thought it was a stepped-down macro coupler... I didn't see that it was an EF-S mount direct to the camera body. I honestly have no idea how that's going to work out.. suffice it to say I have my doubts.

As for the question of aperture.. when reversed, the blades will be between the front of the lens element and the subject - it is impossible to adjust DoF with them in that position. Whenever a lens is reversed, it must be used with the aperture fully open - there's no benefit to stopping down.

That's exactly what I meant. Sorry for mispelling that. English is not my primary language.

Thanks, Woodsie, that's what I was thinking. After reading your answer, I understood why I was surprised by the magnification level achieved by Croesus. I am starting thinking I ordered the wrong adapter ring. Oh well, I'll know when I'll try.

Hi All,

after the discussion we had yesterday, I dicided to try the reversed 50mm f/1.8 on top of my 28-200 mm.

The results are posted here:

I held my EF 50/1.8 II the other way round on my 350D body ( no other lens)and shot a snap of my ring. Not happy with the focus depth...what should I do? Before I go hunting the world over for a reverse ring...see attached pic please...

Hi Sachi, as you see in the thread I mentioned above, in my pics too the DOF is very short... The pic you have posted is very small, but it seems to me to be entirely out of focus. In the tests I had done, the lens where attached to the camera, and I was focusing moving the camera. maybe you can try placing your camera on a tripod, and then focusing moving the 50mm.
