CPL+stepdown+hood question

Noob question….I have a 10-22 which is 77mm & a 18-200 which is 72mm both with hoods. I know I can use a CPL (77mm) and a stepdown ring for both lenses, but will it work with the hood on the 18-200?
Looks like it should clear the hood, but maybe not... Any other issues with this type of arrangement? I was going to purchase the CPL & B&W Schneider 77-72 but if it won’t work with the hood, I won’t need the ring and will have to buy two CPL's.
Thought I would check before I place the order.

You mean use the 10-22 with a 77mm CPL and the 18-200 with a STEP-UP adapter ring. Yes that will work, but you will not be able to use the hood on the 18-200.

So if I understand you correctly, you start at the lens (18-200) and step up to the CPL. I was starting at the CPL and going down to the lens. If I chose to go without the hood, Iwould look to order a male thread 72mm to female thread 77mm ring (step up). Please correct me if I am wrong. Still learning. Thanks again.

Just remember the you need to get your finger in there somehow to adjust the CPL.

Some of us can, some of us cant it seems. I usually can, and do, depending on how Im shooting. But as others seem to have issues with it, perhaps I have long fingers?

It would just seem easier to adjust to get what your looking for from the side rather than putting your hand in front of the lens, refocusing, and repeat.

Not sure if I can do it, but I would like to keep the hood on all the time so I will try it and see if works for me.

Its good practice to use a hood, but to be honest, its not always necessary depending on the conditions.

You will need what Ben mentioned in Post #2...step-up ring...this will allow you to use the 77mm filter on the smaller diameter lens without getting any vignetting.

Another option is to do what some others have done...use a Dremel or something similar to cut a finger slot in the bottom of the hood...this will let you slip in a finger to adjust the CPL. This is really only needed for deep filters...the petal hood for the 10-22 should be plenty shallow enough for you to get your fingers on the filter. An easier option is to use a collapsible rubber hood that you could thread onto the filter...to adjust the CPL, just simply rotate the outer edge of the hood.
