Anybody out there cut the end of a roll seamless off? My local lighting store says people do it using a hacksaw. I don't have enough room for a 9ft roll, what to go 8.5ft.

Thanks for any thoughts

Ralph

Should work...or a fine tooth bandsaw blade would probably do wonders. Fine tooth miter saw too.

If you have any tape that is easy to peel off without ripping, try wrapping that around where you will cut as well.

Thanks, you pretty much are supporting my exactly thoughts. Fine tooth saw and blue painting tape.

I use a 12" electic miter saw. Its worked like a charm twice and takes about 2 seconds. :D

Cut my 2.5metre PVC roll down to 2metres with a good old wood saw... (A good one though).

Tape it over though and ask someone to hold it for you.

Also draw a line right around the end when you cut to follow so you can keep it straight, (if you haven't already thought of that).

Over the years, I have hacked a few rolls down to a shorter length. Mostly 12 foot rolls to something a bit shorter so they will stand on end in a room with a 11.5 foot ceiling.

I just used whatever saw was handy. I have used both hack saws and wood hand saws. The finer the teeth the better.

Enjoy! Lon

Thanks guys

I'm setting up a Manfrotto 3 roll expansion kit with autopoles this weekend. It's always nice to have some expertise going into these kind of projects.

How'd you go?

I used a medium tooth'd hacksaw and cut one of my old rolls to now only need 2 out of 3 cross-bar inserts. The 5" or so cut shaved a full 3 ft off my space requirements. The edge is a little frayed looking, but will shoot fine.

I'm not sure if I'll do it with my Thunder Gray - I shoot that a lot without lighting it... so I'd hate to introduce any ripples or damage.

Rolls in Aus are about $140AUD each - so about $1000 USD at the moment. That's a lot more than I'd like to blow haha

What??!! Papers are 1000 bucks each!? Is that from shipping or what? I just paid less than 40 bucks for a roll of thunder grey, 9 feet wide.

How did they ship it?

BTW, I didn't have to cut the paper. I was able to get the Manfrotto Seamless expansion system set up with two 9' rolls in my studio with a whole 1/2" to spare.

UPS didn't take anything over 8' in the past. That's the reason I ask.
