New birding / wildlife lens on the buy list: 100-400L IS. Will put 135L on the block to fund a better birding lens.

Thanks for looking,

dave

I wouldn't have considered the 135L as a birding lens, but you sure have done a great with it. Very nice shots, are you shoting through a window?

Thank you, Randy. Yep, through dirty double-paned windows. As mentioned, weather has been miserably cloudy for the most part, raining then changing over to snow. Today was really first nice day in as long as I can remember.

The only good thing is that I thought through placement of the feeders so the birds would be close when shooting from indoor vantage point.

Quite a nice collection for those miserable conditions... I hear your plight on the weather, the clouds and flurries have hung on the shore of the Big Lake for the last month...

Good shots, but I think you boosted up sharpness too much. Birds are fine but backgrounds need some softening.

Pretty good for thru the window, Dave, good looking pics. I think they look just fine. They sure like sitting on that black iron thing you have!

Thanks WR. Mostly, the birds queue up on the hook for a turn at the feeder! Especially the goldfinches. They'll stay up there until it's safe to jump down and feed without being shooed off by the house finches!

Great captures. Agree that I'd relax the sharpening for the background only.

Not to get too far off track, but, coming from a 135, would a 70-200 be better next-step than the 100-400? I love my 100-400 but it's not on par with a 135L. The 70-200 is, and it holds up well with a 1.4x TC.

The quality of the images is outstanding. I hope someday to develop my technique so that I can produce the results you get.

snyderman...you totally embarass me. Your shots are every bit better than mine and I shoot with a 300 f2.8L. My excuse...I'm an old fart with shakey hands.

Glass panel and lens notwithstanding, those are very good shots.

Thanks for the tip. Also, I believe I exported the images as way too small file sizes. Most are in the 150-250k range file size.

They were sharp and smooth as decent sized files!

Thanks. Winter in NE Ohio means endless crappy weather and shooting indoors out. ;)

Old? Me too. Plus I cheat and put the edge of the lens right onto the window glass to steady the lens. :o Just had to make sure there was enough 'edge' around the front element so it never touches the glass.

Innovation, man!
