WOW. If the images are as awesome as the spec-I want one. I do hope Canon answer with something good. But I get a feeling they will not be able to compete without damaging 1DX status and sales.

No AA filter

Supposedly, the resolution encroaches on MF territory with that

Oops! That's I meant. Hehe! :)

This is what I really don't understand.

The D4 and D800 don't really compete with each other, despite both being weather-sealed and having pro AF systems. The former is a photojournalist's and sports photographer's camera, capable of 11fps and clean high ISOs. The latter is a megapixel monster, designed for studio and landscape photography, or applications which require heavy cropping. Wedding/general photographers can choose either.

A high-resolution, fully weather-sealed, non-crippled AF 5D3 would hardly compete with the 1Dx. You'd get the former if you needed megapixels and ultimate IQ at lower ISOs (below 3200 or so), while you'd get the latter if you need 12fps and clean ISO 102400. That way, Canon could compete with Nikon without competing with itself. On the other hand, releasing a crippled 5D3 would just be surrendering the market share entirely to Nikon.

Hopefully Canon lose huge swathes of market share, as rumour has it... Canon may look to medium format if they lose too many sales from the lack of high res 35mm camera's.

They were way ahead of Nikon to get to 35mm, so Canon may make a similar move again. Would love a fairly affordable MF DSLR...

Only if they can release a line of medium-format tilt-shifts at the same time!

Hopefully ISO is good as well.

"Nikon has said that the noise performance equals that of the 12.1 megapixel full-frame D700 despite the sensor including exactly 3x as many pixels."

If they mean the *per pixel* noise performance, that'd be incredible!

If they mean the overall noise performance, that would be expected anyway.

Hopefully it's per pixel, I think it's possible, especially if you look at the ISO advantage the D3s has over the D700, and the rumoured 1 stop ISO advantage of the D4 over the D3s, so there should be plenty of headroom to do it.

I did not know the new D800 could do this, WOW.

"Nikon users who have invested in DX-format lenses will be able to use them on the D800 by using the 15.4MP resolution setting. In this setting, only the pixels that cover a DX-sized portion of the sensor will be active, giving the camera a 1.5x crop"

D700 can do that too but of course smaller MPs.

^^^
I think Canon knows not to pull the same AF crap with the mkiii, expect 7D AF or better imo, and maybe even proper weather sealing...

Not so sure about that..
In my book there are practically many limitations yet even from the newest of the sensors..
It would be awesome if the Nikon claims about same ISO capability of D700 is passed to D800.. But with three times the pixel count and taking into account the SNR ratio I'm more than skeptical about that claim.
And I have a feeling there would be a significant drop in the DR as well compared to D700.
All that remain to be seen in the near future..
D800 is impressive to say the least.
[Speculation] But if it doesn't live up to its expectations and claims,I wouldn't buy a camera with lower IQ/ISO capability than my 5DMkII just for the AF and the MP count.[/speculation]
It's sure gonna be a very interesting winter..
