I think Canon knows not to pull the same AF crap with the mkiii, expect 7D AF or better imo, and maybe even proper weather sealing...

yea i hope so or else screw canon. im no fanboy and i will happily ditch them

Agreed. How can we pass judgement into an unreleased product?
Hell we can't pass judgement on a serious basis even for the D800 before we see some meaningful reviews and in depth analysis rather than plain specs..

Not so sure about that..
In my book there are practically many limitations yet even from the newest of the sensors..
It would be awesome if the Nikon claims about same ISO capability of D700 is passed to D800.. But with three times the pixel count and taking into account the SNR ratio I'm more than skeptical about that claim.
And I have a feeling there would be a significant drop in the DR as well compared to D700.

I would say this is probably very unlikely, just look at the DR of the D7K, even if this chip is an up scaled D7000 chip, it will have astonishing DR.
I have/had both a D700 & D7000, in terms of DR and ability to push shadows without image degradation, the D7K won hands down. Obviously the D7K couldn't match ISO performance though.

All that remain to be seen in the near future..
D800 is impressive to say the least.
[Speculation] But if it doesn't live up to its expectations and claims,I wouldn't buy a camera with lower IQ/ISO capability than my 5DMkII just for the AF and the MP count.[/speculation]
It's sure gonna be a very interesting winter..

I doubt there will be a drop in the DR.

The D3x had twice the pixels of the D700, and has the greatest DR of any current full-frame DSLR.

The D800 has three years of extra technology on top of that.

D700 can do that too but of course smaller MPs.

I guess I need to take a peek over the fence every once in a while.

But surely the d800 wont be worse then a d700 which is already far superior then 5dmk2

But the D800 doesn't look to be that much better feature wise, i.e. little better AF, 100% viewfinder etc. There are some nice little ergonomic changes that a D700 user will appreciate, but the main difference seems to be that 36mp chip.

Which fills the main deficiency of the D700.

The AF was already Nikon's top-of-the-line pro-level AF, and it seems that that has continued. You can't get more coverage than a 100% viewfinder.

Landscape and studio photographers put up with the 5D2's many deficiencies for the extra megapixels and IQ. Nikon has now closed that gap - and, if the 5D3 is less than 36MP with no AA filter - surpassed it by a long shot.

I've enjoyed watching everyone freak out over the last 24 hours :) Any of you follow fredmiranda.com? Other photographers called me a moron for saying this last week, but yesterday Fred Miranda said "Canon better wake up. Sooner than later! If Canon releases a 18MP replacement for the 5DII, some heads are gonna roll."

A lot of us, on a lot of forums, have been panicking for weeks, and now it's just fun to watch the rest of the world catch up with us :) Anyone want to buy a 24-70? It has a sexy sexy zoom lock ;)

There are simply nothing major they can improve on D700 other than MP and Video which are its biggest weaknesses.

In everything except the sensor, yes.

AF? 51-point pro system vs 9-point system not much different from the 40D. And the D800 takes it a step further, by making nine of the points f/8-capable.
Weather sealing? Full weather-sealing vs partial weather sealing.
Frame rate? 5fps (8 with grip) vs 3.9fps for 5D2. D800 is 4fps, which is still faster than the 5D2.
Viewfinder? D700 was 95%, D800 is 100%.

Some of us here have been saying the same thing ever since the D800 was first rumoured to be 36MP (i.e. some time last year) - this was because, even if they kept everything else the same as the D700, they would have filled the one gap in the D700's capabilities, the one gap that made the 5D2 competitive in any way.
