This is game changer for sure. Pro AF and resolution over the 1D X just made me think about not buying the 1D X. :)

If FPS are irrelevant to what you shoot 3k goes a long way toward glass--and a version for simplifying the life of us backward slugs that use a camera to take actual pictures. ;)

For me, thats what I'd likely do, Id have the D800 over the 1DX...

$3000 in glass? Hmn....will that swing say...a 35mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4?

Huh? I thought the only reason to not have the AA filter is better IQ. I don't shoot video. So, that doesn't matter to me.

The AA filter blurs the light from the lens reducing and capping the resolution of the images. Obviously removing this artificial handicap will improve resolution (and ISO), but if the sensor cannot adequately out resolve the lens (or at least get close), then you get aliasing and moire.
The higher the resolution of the chip (or pixel density) the lesser problems like moire become.
If you have a super super super sharp lens, then moire will become a common occurrence.

I however shoot my primes wide open 95% of the time, so I doubt I will hardly ever experience moire.

Maybe Nikon found a way to eliminate moire entirely without the AA filter. When I had the Leica M9, I did not see this issue.

One article I read said that Nikon will later release a tool to use with their software to tackle moire from the D800E. Who knows when or how well it will work though.

Lightroom 4 beta (avalible right now) has a a new feature that removes moire.

For most people it won't be an issue, but like if your a fashion photographer, certain fabrics etc. with very small repeating patterns can cause issues, although MF camera's suffer even worse due to low pixel density.
The higher res of the sensor though, should mean moire is less of a problem than it was with your M9.

Here some info I'v found from Nikon

Uncompressed Hdmi output is nice for video... IIRC the 1DX doesnt even have that...

I also like they are releasing 2 subtly different models and the price is "reasonable"

I doubt the 5D will come in at this price prolly closer to 3500

"We took our prototype D800s into the studio with great anticipation, and spent one full day prepping before we shot. The very first image zapped through the tether and hit the screen with a WOW. The resolution – first of all – is unprecedented. Testing the camera was nothing short of a delight. Crew members – the hair and make-up people, usually too cool to comment, stood in speechless wonder as the first images came up on the screen. Then there was a Group OMG from the crowd. This was different – not only fat, colorful, and crisp, it held the detail in the bright highlights. The screen images look like a medium format camera but the body handles smoothly and effortlessly like a D700. My Medium Format dreams are answered.

This is a camera for someone who wants extraordinary detail and super fine quality. I used to say that a D3x rivals a medium format camera. The D800 changes my inclination toward anything bigger."

That's what I was thinking. For macro work, it should be excellent.

The shot of the lips with the 105mm f/2.8G VR is what got me thinking..the detail and color in that shot is very very cool

The one weakness my 7D legitimately has(IQ wise at least) in my opinion is a poor rendition of red in many instances, it very easily and quickly blows out the red channel losing all detail in it... The D800 doesnt appear to suffer from this weakness
