I've not been out shooting football for a few weeks now but tonight gave me the oppertunity to get out with the 1D. Ideally I wanted to break it in daylight but shoddy lights at AUFC gave me a chance to play with something my 350D doesnt have....custom iso:confused:

Tonights offering was a SLPD match Vs Cheshunt which Aylesbury won 1-0

You'll see (rather obviously;) ) that they are very noisy, to be expected at 3200 on a 1D. IIRC I also read that dropping the exposure increases the noise. I had to do this to get some semi decent shutter speeds...unless someone knows a better method ?

I think I'm pleased, I didnt set out to get something to blow up and hang on the wall, I recon they should if needs be reproduce in the local paper pretty well.

My next time out is a week tonight and by the looks of it my next match in daylight is around Christmas:eek:

C&C welcome as always.

You reckon those are shoddy lights!!!
Good effort I say, in very hard conditions. I know, I've tried. I went to play at a cup match last night with my 10D, messed about with white balance, iso3200 and managed to get some shots which would be better in black & white.

Marc did you find that you had large areas which were poorly lit and one or two sweet spots? I ended up waiting for action in these areas.
I think these were both 1/125 at 2.8, about 2 stops under!!
Anybody else have any thoughts?

Shaun

Yea I know what you mean about the light. I think Gavin (gmen) refered to them once as 'sweet spots'. As I have done Aylesbury a few times at night I know the better areas in terms of light. Mind you I'm pretty happy to fire away anywhere at the mo....you'll see from the post I was even brave enough to havea dabble with the 300 f4 in the dark now I have the extra iso to play with.

What lens were you using ?

Marc
I've a 300 2.8 that I've had for three years, best thing I have ever spent my money on.
But my business manager (the wife)will not let me have a 1D mkII to go with it! (YET)

Marc,
I think your shots look great . Especially for shooting a 4.0/f. I use a 200 1.8f with a 1D Mark IIN. It's like cheating.

Boggy, I dont have a biz manager (sacked her a few yrs back ;) ) but my bank balance cant handle that kind of money yet!

Bruce..thanks!

I had some good news today that in the new year I will have the chance to shoot a night game at Wycombe Wanderers when they play Aylesbury. Wycombe have a 'proper' stadium so the lights should make life easier...looking forward to that now :)

Hope you have a good time at Wycombe. The game I covered, Hamble were offered a reversal and could have played at Eastleigh. The Hamble boss didn't agree and thought they had a chance at home........ They lost 6-1
