The Feds need to keep their beaks out of bird business. This time they have grounded the ultra lights that shepherd the few remaining whooping cranes from their hatching grounds to their wintering grounds in Florida and Alabama. Because of a rule that prevents ultra light pilots from taking money. How pathetic is that?

Now the birds and the plane are grounded in Alabama (external link) while the Federal Aviation Administration investigates whether the journey violates regulations because the pilot was being paid by a conservation group to lead the cranes on their first migration instead of working for free.

Maybe the pilot could just take enough money to cover the expenses of the plane.
Then a "donation" for time.

Maybe the fools in the government could just use their pin sized brains and some common sense.

I was lucky enough to go with our local camera club to the place this all happens at here in Wisconsin. We got the grand tour, even going over to where the planes are kept and maintained. We got to see them training the birds to fly behind the planes. It was a memorable experience. None of which is funded by federal money as far as I know, so why are they sticking their noses in this?

Come on Mitch, you know you can't use the words government and common sense in the same sentance.

Well, the good news is, the Feds gave them an exemption. (external link) :)

Maybe they read the Bird forum?

Thanks to Sharon for the link, she lives down there. :)

I've been over to Necedah NWR too and took the tour a few years ago. I follow Operation Migration and am glad to hear they can continue, stupid that they were grounded in the first place!
