I have a Canon EOS 450D and learning Photoshop (CS5)

I take my photos in RAW and do most of the editing in PS Adobe RAW. I save the edited photos in jpeg format, but keep the originals. My computer crashed and I am not sure what I do wrong, but there is a lot of noise when I use a photo as a desktop background.

Editing:

Background (the noise does not shw up very well in this screenshot):

Picture data:

Any advice please??

Well, the fact that the image looks completely different color-wise, is because you used AdobeRGB.

To use an image for your screen saver or desktop background (and only then), convert it to your monitor profile.
For web, use sRGB. In all other cases: "It depends".

On the noise: Are you resizing the image, or is windows? (Hint: The former is the better option)

Thanks for the reply.

The color is not the issue for me (red green color blind!) but the noise.

What I did was to open the image in Adobe RAW, edited it, but not cropping or resizing as far as I know and save as a JPEG with maximum quality. What I did see however is that one has two options in the link underneath the picture- 240 ppi or 240 pixels per cm. Would the 240 pixels per cm not be the better choice?

Thanks

When you zoom to 100% with the raw editor you don't see the noise?

Post a 100% crop.

At ISO200 it's most likely user or software error, even on an old 450D.

OK, I can see the noise you are talking about in that crop.

Noise can be kind of an unpredictable "varmint" -- at ISO 200 you would think your shot would be quite clean with any of our cameras, unless you had to really boost exposure, but it can sometimes crop up unexpectedly.

Anyway, sorry about that, I don't know what the root cause would be...but for this image, try some of the noise reduction in ACR and see if that doesn't help. I'd apply both some Color as well as Luminance NR.

Wow, weird noise for ISO200. Can you post the raw online for us to look at?

I have a feeling it is the way you processed the RAW file. Just looking at the Basic tab in your screen shot and it looks like some of your settings are all over the place. Are any of the other tabs cranked as well? Like Tim said, post a RAW to take a look at.

Color NR should take care of that just fine.
ppi is irrelevant. Resize the image to your monitors dimensions.

Hi
Not sure how to post images online as they are so big! This is not only a problem with this photo, with others as well.
I will post if someone will advise me how and then I am just looking for basic settings- not vibrance, contrast, etc; but ppi, etc.
Thanks!

Another place you can use to upload a Raw or full-size jpeg is YouSendIt.com. You can enter your email address as the "Recipient", upload, and they will send you a notice with a link that you can post here.

As to "basic settings", I'm not sure what you are looking for, besides Noise Reduction -- "ppi" has nothing to do with displaying an image. For your desktop "background" I'd just look at the native resolution of your monitor and then resize your image to that resolution (after cropping it to the proper aspect ratio).

You mention "enlarging" to make that display but really, if you are dealing with your original shot there are not "enlarging" unless you are taking a pic that has already been "shrunk" to a small size and then you are enlarging it. Take your original shot which is what, 10 MegaPixels? Then, you resize it down to "fit" your screen, which is way less than 10MPs. In fact, even if there is noise in your original image, sizing it down will actually reduce the visible noise, unless you do something really off!

That site wasn't giving a simple download. Try a single file with YouSendIt.com -- it's very easy for us to get to the file!
