New 7D.

I've got a few accessories, which plug into my 450d remote cable release socket, which has a different connector on the 7d. the 450d uses a mini-plug. The 7d uses a 3 pin connector (n3 I think).

Anyone aware of an adapter? Is that even possible?

That's the great thing about standards - there are so many of them. <grin>

Google "Canon E3 to N3 adapter" - there are several results showing how it can be done.

I'm not sure where you could find an adapter, but...

Ah - the connector numbers are the key. I was not sure what they were called. I had treid googling "450d to 7d shutter release adapter" and it's ilk, but came up dry. Thanks for the insight.

Now I just have to find the parts.

You can find these for pretty cheap on eBay too. Well worth the upgrade, you won't miss your old remote all.

...but if you just need a simple cable release, they're easily available on Ebay for around five dollars. As these are just a simple make/break switch, compatibility is no issue. I use one on my 7D with no problem.

The compatibility issue the OP was talking about is the connector on the camera body itself. The Rebel series use an E3 connector, whereas the xD/xxD bodies use an N3. Completely different connectors and not compatible with each other.

I'm aware of that and when I used the word, I meant in in terms of compatibility against Canon branded releases at six times the price. My careless choice of words.

Ah, gotcha. In that case, I agree completely!

Well, I've got an intervalometer, and some releases, and some extension cables. The mini-plug is really handy for extension cables....

I will probably end up replacing some of them, but one adapter brings all the gear forward - and enables me to use both cameras without a ton of extra stuff in the camera bag.

It never ceases to amaze me, with the number and type of connectors in the world, that someone still needs to create a new one.

sigh.

This is easy, if I find the part.

Jim

Creating new connectors is partly intended to force people to buy similar things more than once. Just look at car cell-phone chargers. You used to have to choose between a different one for each cell phone brand, and sometimes more than one per brand. Now there seems to be a shift to more standardized USB connectors for charging electronics, which I believe is partly due to the EU requiring more compatibility to avoid filling up landfills with obsolete electronic waste.
