Before everyone gets too excited about my "end of the world" prophecy, I am in no way suggesting that this is about to happen. I am merely curious about the possibility of Canon ending their EF line. There is a precedent here. They did it before by ending the FD lineup. Granted that these are different times and the amount of camera owners out there with EF lenses probably vastly outnumber the number of people who owned FD lenses. Canon would most certainly face an even more vicious backlash than it did last time. However Canon had their reasons for discontinuing the FD lineup and they have given us some very capable and excellent lenses in return.

My question is, in what time frame and for what reasons could you possibly see this happening again. Nothing is forever. I don't anticipate future humans in the year 3011 using a lens mount from 1000 years previous. It will end at some time. I have a lot of money invested in lenses at this point and would hate to see them instantly lose their value due to a decision from higher ups in Japan.

Thank you and to those of you with weak hearts who may have had their pacemakers just save their lives, I sincerely apologize to you ;). If I accidentally killed your loved one, hopefully a power failure will erase my transgression.

Aaron

I don't think you will have to worry about canon discontinuing your EF lens mount for awhile;)

The move from FD to EF was necessary because the old format wasn't big enough to accommodate the additional electronics and the added weight of making significantly larger lenses. Nikon chose the other path, and are now saddled with a smaller mount, and less total room to build in other features. The EF, being a total re-write of the spec, allowed Canon to somewhat "future-proof" the mount for the foreseeable future. I think what will obviate the EF mount will be a radical shift to another imaging technology, rather than another generation of the camera obscura.

If they change the format, probably would be called FU...

So then my point may become somewhat valid for Nikon users. I'm not worried at all about the future of the EF mount. My only observation was that someone pointed out that bodies come and go but lenses hold their value. My thinking was that that is true, to a point and yet I go to used camera shops and see FD lenses on sale for a fraction of their original value. I always think of the guy (or girl ;) )who bought the last FD mount camera from Canon before they announced the change and what a sucker he must have felt like. I know Canon has too much money tied into development and research on lenses with their mount. I don't believe Pentax has ever changed their mount. I'm merely interested in thoughts on a time frame and reasons, if they even exist. I've been told I'm unique but I refuse to believe I'm the first one who has ever thought of this.

I would agree with what's posted above, it will probably only change once imaging technology reaches a point where the whole dSLR concept has become obsolete......and I have no idea when that may be.

They'll end it when they have some crazy 3D solution with fluid filled 10MM circular fisheye f/1.2 with a zoom to 1000MM f/2.8 using nanotechnology.

It will cost $5,500 have 1TB on board memory with automatic cloud backup shoot at 4k frames per second continuous and have 100 MP on the sensor.

Just a guess.

EF isnt going anywhere... You can use it on canon bodies, and in addition, it is quickly being adopted for film/video usage all across the spectrum (scarlet, C300, F3, etc etc) with tons of mounts being developed.

Buy some more glass.
