I never held a 1D body, I'm assuming the controls, featrures and all other bells and whistles of this camera are all ahead of 5D. Besides the basic dials and buttons to operate the camera, is there a huge difference in terms of learning curve to make sure I get the most out of it?

The only reason I ask is this because there's a local seller willing to sell his 1dsMiii for $3000.00, which I think is a great deal, I'm normally fine with the center point of the 5D since I do mostly portraits but improvement in the AF department this years is probably needed as I plan to shoot moving objects too.

My only issue with switching right now is I have a few lined up projects for the next week or two and I certainly dont want to use a camera, without having a full understanding on how to make it work.

There are many differences in how the 1 series cameras handle and need to be set-up compared to the 5D but none of them are difficult to come to terms with if you approach the camera logically.
At the price you are quoting I think I would jump straight in without a thought!
Are you having to trade the 5D to do this deal? If not then buy the 1DsMkIII but do your important work with the 5D and learn the new camera before you have to use it in anger.

I have a 5D and a 1D, they work pretty much the same. There are a few small differences, like the 1D has no mode dial. But that kind of stuff isn't really a big deal.

I think about the only think you should spend some time reading about is the AF system and the custom functions associated with it.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

I would say quite a lot of difference is use, DS better by far in every aspect, except iq it is just tad behind 5D mk2 and most of all ISO. The biggest gain is shutter lag and focus speed.

Eventhough I don;t need it right now, this is exactly why I want to do it! He's also a CPS member and the body has been serviced last November.

I would have to sell my 5DMII for this btw.

Yeah Julian. The prospect of owning a better focusing FF camera really excites me.:)
