Canon today unveiled the PowerShot G1 X ($799), a camera that offers both the convenience and portability of a compact camera and the promise of the kind of uncompromising image quality one expects from a DSLR, thanks to a new, near-APS-sized sensor. Did they succeed? Let's take a first look at this new camera and see if it's a game-changer.

The big news is its big 14-megapixel sensor, which is a new format that's just a tad smaller than the APS-C sensors found on Canon starter and intermediate-level DSLRs, and somewhat larger than a Four Thirds sensor.

Your first-look article says: "Conspicuously missing from the G1 X is a built-in flash." That's not true per this I-R first-look article;

It looks rather large, of course due to the larger sensor and optics. And, that's a large price for my wallet anyway. Although, it is interesting.

The G1 X offers a pop-up flash that's manually-operated using switch behind it on the top plate, rather than the front-plate example on previous G series cameras.

The camera's Smart Auto mode includes a multi-area white balance feature that attempts to correct both for ambient light and the effect of the built-in flash.

It definitely have to have a flash as the underwater housing has a diffuser. Also without a flash underwater sTTL will not be able to work with a strobe.

I don't know about that price...doesn't have that retro look that makes it worthy of a $800 P&S.

Seems pretty pricey. No price given on Canon USA's website though.

Wish the lens was a little longer ... but probably will get one.

It kind of seems that both Canon and Nikon are hesitant to give us what we really want for fear of cannibalizing their dslr sales.

I think the price is MSRP, I doubt the price will stay there long. That article about the mirrorless is interesting. Would be cool to have EF compatibility, but that would totally kill the compactness of it.

Maybe EF with an adapter. To me, the whole selling point of the m4/3 offerings or the Nikon 1 is the smaller form factor body along with smaller lenses. That's why I don't like the Sony Nex. Smaller body, but standard sized lenses.

But it has an APS-C sensor and a 28-115mm zoom starting at f2.8. People pay $600+ for a DSLR with a kit zoom, this is the same thing but the lens retracts into the body. THat's worth some extra cash, IMO.

This is going to be a huge hit, IMO. The main competitor is the GX1 with the 14-42PZ and that's a combo that runs well over $1000 - even more with a viewfinder.
