I've seen sample images and they look nice but the variable aperture lens and stepped zoom is a non sequitur for me, along with the weird filter attachment feature that prevents a lens hood from being mounted with a filter.
You mentioned the Fujifilm X10 as a better camera. Doesn't the X10 have a variable-aperture lens as well (F2-F2.8)?
With its much larger sensor, the G1x at its tele end with F5.6 have the same DOF as the X10 wth its F2.8. (For head-and-shoulder portraits, the subject being 6 ft away, the DOFs are 0.64 and 0.61 ft, respectively.)

The optical finder doesn't bother me since I never use it now; as a G10, G11, and G12 user it would have been nice to see Canon step up and be more imaginative introducing a new kind of camera, a la, FujiFilm's new Pro X1 and lenses. Yes the FFPX1 is more expensive but at $799 list, the G X1 camera disappoints when compared to the FujiFilm X10.
The Pro X1 plue one lens would cost about $1700. At that price point, you might as well go with a DSLR -- way more versatility in lenses/flashes/other accessories.
The X10 is a nice camera (its ugly pseudo-retro styling notwithstanding), but the G1x has a much larger sensor (2.7 times to be exact), which offers huge advantages in low-light use.
I've used higher-end Fujifilm compacts -- I still own the venerable F30 and the F200EXR. The F30 user interface is simply horrible, and even the much improved F200EXR lagged behind Canon cameras of the same era. One of my biggest pet peeves with Fujifilm cameras was the lack of histogram.
To this day, I see Fujifilm still has not implemented it properly in the X100 and X10:

I'm not a FujiFilm fanboi but I have been truly impressed with this camera. What saddens me is the loss of eTTL functionality with my stable of Canon flashes. By comparison FF's flash offerings are lame. But there are work arounds, particularly when experienced flash shooters can use digtial cameras as dig-roids and finess manual control with variable output in manual mode.
I'm not a Canon fanboi, so I'll be the first to point out Canon compacts have a long tradition of lacking eTTL in full-manual mode. This is a well-known flaw of the G series and S90/S95/S100 (which are otherwise some of most well loved non-DSLRs for underwater use).
However, full eTTL is supported in P/A/S, and even in full-manual, one can adjust flash output (low/medium/high with the built-in flash, and a lot more gradation with higher-end Speedlites), so for above-water use, one shouldn't run into too much trouble.
Having said all that, if you are going to fuss with an external flash, you might as well use a DSLR. The size/bulk advantage of a compact camera (over a DSLR) is largely gone by the time you attach an external flash. In fact, with beefy units like the 580EX II, a G-series or X10 will feel really off-balance.

Yes I will sell my G10 and accessories to fund my next camera though I'm still undecided about what that will be. I may just say screw the whole small camera thing and go back to using my Canon DSLRs, but who knows. But no protest sale. I've pushed the G cameras to their limits and it's time to move on.
Definitely.
If you are ready to spend the kind of money for a X10 ($600) or a G1x ($800), you can easily find yourself a higher-end Rebel or a used 60D.
