I think the ISO images will be similar to what you can expect to see on a 600D. If so, then that would be a really major achievement. This would be the first time that a P&S can compete with a DSLR when it comes to low light performance.

Not unless you regard the X100 as something other than a P&S? The X100 makes BETTER JPGs than the 600D, IMO, and has especially strong high ISO performance.

For me this camera is a broken promise (metaphorically). As such this will end my relation with the G series cameras. Close but no cigar.

Does this mean you're selling your G-series unit? A protest sale, as it were?

Also, too: Interesting in-depth pre-production review [EDIT: The review seems in fact to be based on an "early production unit"] of the G1X here. (external link) Very analyitical with lots of coloful charts and graphs, albeit with one quizzical conclusion (for RAW shooters only, they say - what, us JPEGers are too busy dragging our knuckles to appreciate blurred backgrounds and reduced noise in low-light images?)

Cheers,
Robin Michael

I've seen sample images and they look nice but the variable aperture lens and stepped zoom is a non sequitur for me, along with the weird filter attachment feature that prevents a lens hood from being mounted with a filter.

The optical finder doesn't bother me since I never use it now; as a G10, G11, and G12 user it would have been nice to see Canon step up and be more imaginative introducing a new kind of camera, a la, FujiFilm's new Pro X1 and lenses. Yes the FFPX1 is more expensive but at $799 list, the G X1 camera disappoints when compared to the FujiFilm X10.

I'm not a FujiFilm fanboi but I have been truly impressed with this camera. What saddens me is the loss of eTTL functionality with my stable of Canon flashes. By comparison FF's flash offerings are lame. But there are work arounds, particularly when experienced flash shooters can use digtial cameras as dig-roids and finess manual control with variable output in manual mode.

Yes I will sell my G10 and accessories to fund my next camera though I'm still undecided about what that will be. I may just say screw the whole small camera thing and go back to using my Canon DSLRs, but who knows. But no protest sale. I've pushed the G cameras to their limits and it's time to move on.

I hear that. I love my G12 in bright daylight, but this winter's relative darkness has seen me struggle to get clear handheld shots without cranking the ISO over 800. Unlike you, however, I'm finding the G1X an intriguing, if expenseive (for me) option. It retains much of what I like about the G12 - fold-out screen (I generally use it to shoot like I'm holding an old dual-lens reflex - keeps my arms close to my body, giving me a fairly stable grip), zoom capability (albeit now truncated) in a fixed lens, physical dials (RIP ISO knob, however), small enough to fit in my overcoat pocket, and light enough to use with my lightweight aluminum tripod (for when I feel like carrying it), and adding DSLR-like results. I'm definitely going to check it out.

Cheers,
Robin Michael

You mentioned the Fujifilm X10 as a better camera. Doesn't the X10 have a variable-aperture lens as well (F2-F2.8)?

With its much larger sensor, the G1x at its tele end with F5.6 have the same DOF as the X10 wth its F2.8. (For head-and-shoulder portraits, the subject being 6 ft away, the DOFs are 0.64 and 0.61 ft, respectively.)

The Pro X1 plue one lens would cost about $1700. At that price point, you might as well go with a DSLR -- way more versatility in lenses/flashes/other accessories.

The X10 is a nice camera (its ugly pseudo-retro styling notwithstanding), but the G1x has a much larger sensor (2.7 times to be exact), which offers huge advantages in low-light use.

I've used higher-end Fujifilm compacts -- I still own the venerable F30 and the F200EXR. The F30 user interface is simply horrible, and even the much improved F200EXR lagged behind Canon cameras of the same era. One of my biggest pet peeves with Fujifilm cameras was the lack of histogram.

To this day, I see Fujifilm still has not implemented it properly in the X100 and X10:

I'm not a Canon fanboi, so I'll be the first to point out Canon compacts have a long tradition of lacking eTTL in full-manual mode. This is a well-known flaw of the G series and S90/S95/S100 (which are otherwise some of most well loved non-DSLRs for underwater use).

However, full eTTL is supported in P/A/S, and even in full-manual, one can adjust flash output (low/medium/high with the built-in flash, and a lot more gradation with higher-end Speedlites), so for above-water use, one shouldn't run into too much trouble.

Having said all that, if you are going to fuss with an external flash, you might as well use a DSLR. The size/bulk advantage of a compact camera (over a DSLR) is largely gone by the time you attach an external flash. In fact, with beefy units like the 580EX II, a G-series or X10 will feel really off-balance.

Definitely.

If you are ready to spend the kind of money for a X10 ($600) or a G1x ($800), you can easily find yourself a higher-end Rebel or a used 60D.

G1X will definitely be on my to-buy list. It's perfect for me, I am by no means good at photography, still a beginner who has enjoyed the G11 for what it is but would like a bit better IQ. I have a T1i that doesn't get used often, as I don't like to travel with it (most of my "photography" activity is when I am on vacation). This is a perfect compromise!

This is a great camera for press coverage in crowded rough conditions. It is nice to have BOTH decent video and stills in a compact size. I will get one.

I gave been saving some money for my next purchase, thinking it might be a nice prime. I have been looking for a good small camera to keep with me (virtually) at all times; this looks like exactly what I have been looking for.

its looking quite possible for me. I'm quite the amater who will never buy a big camera. I shoot mainly low light with kids and whilst out with my family. I just wish it would shoot faster.

Hopefully he simply pressed a wrong button while trying to quote you (not an unreasonable assumption for someone who only had 6 posts so far).

You are welcome to your opinion, by all means...but I personally see where the X10 is at an advantage over the G1 X...and this is coming from an impartial observer.

If Magnum's Alex Majoli and others were using Olympus point and shoots, Canon G series compacts, micro four thirds and the like, it would seem the that the G1X will do extremely well among photojournalists wanting something smaller than a dslr.
