wow a 1/3 sensor. is that a step back? sample images appear soft for both the 16 and 10mp sensors even at low iso.

Press release is here (external link), but they don't address the Elph sensors. If it is a 1/3" sensor as they're usually described, it'll be one of the smallest ones Canon's yet used. Judging from the focal lengths of the new cameras, it may well be that.

I say it's a typo.
Canon.co.uk says 1/2.3":

If it is a typo, then the lens focal lengths are a typo, too. the 520 lists them at 4-48mm and 28-336mm equivalent. That means they are a 7x crop. 1/2.3" sensors are a 5.6x crop. For example, look at the ELPH 100HS specs. 28mm equivalent at 5.0mm with a 1/2.3" sensor.

I guess that is how you fit a 12x zoom in a 19mm thick body. The ELPH 520 is a hair thinner than the ELPH 300HS

I see your point, Taylor.
Following that rational, the ELPH 520 has a 1/3" sensor (oh my god!),
but the ELPH 110 does have a 1/2.3" sensor (24mm / 4.3mm = 5.6).

Thanks,

It still has a Backlit CMOS, so maybe it will be almost as good a basic 1/2.3" CCD sensor for noise. That's not a ringing endorsement for sensor quality, but hey, it's one of Canon's smallest and lightest compacts ever and it's got a 12x zoom. So that's kinda cool.

Creating a smaller sensor doesn't impress me much,
but coupling it with a x12 zoom may be interesting
if the image quality will be acceptable - at that size,
I imagine the dynamic range will be less than stellar.

sad, cant they have a larger sensor and high sensitivity? hahaha, i forgot, thats reserved for the 1Dx. Im not forgeting the fact that these new cameras cost $50 usd more than their predecessor with a smaller sensor and higher mp count for the 110hs.

It has a smaller sensor because they wanted to fit a 12x zoom in the body of their smallest compact. As I said above, it's only 19mm (3/4") thick.

yes i know, i was reading the link. canon's response was sensitivity, not zoom.

That's not what I am getting from the link:

"In order to guarantee superb image quality with the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS’ miniaturized lens structure, its sensor has been shrunk to 1/3 inch and the size of its pixels has been increased to improve its light-gathering abilities. The good news is that a smaller and shorter lens can be designed around the smaller sensor size. "

"Salespeople note: While consumers have been conditioned to expect that More Megapixels = Better Pictures, it’s important to stress that in the case of the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS’ tiny image sensor, having less megapixels is not a compromise but an intentional design decision that ensures image quality has not been sacrificed for portability!"
