I love this photo - the colors of the flower with the butterfly are amazing. However, I would like to see it cropped tighter with more emphasis on the flower and butterfly. I think that would show it off in a spectacular way.

My sentiments exactly... everthing is great...just crop it in nice and tight.

Very nice. However a tighter crop would ruin the composition. Rule of thirds also would mean for there to be a touch more background above the flower but that would likely mean a black empty distraction. It may work for there to be more below but I like it the way it is.
Great photo Rudi.

Not familiar with the "rule of thirds". But then I do not feel that rules apply to art. I would just love to see the main subject bigger - in all of it's glory!

Colin,

Thanks for sticking up for me! :D

Just kidding, folks! BTW, I have tried different crops, but in the end I left it as it was out-of-camera, since I liked it best that way. I intentionally shot it this way, and you're right, Colin: the background - it's not very pretty above this frame! :eyes

What you see on your screen is actually much larger than what the flower and butterfly are in real life. I've tried other crops, but they did not work for me, so I left it as it was.

Thanks for the link - my photography teacher tells his students basically the same thing, not to have things centered in the photo. But there are exceptions to every rule.

I've seen many fantastic photographs with subjects that are smack dab in the middle of the photo. But it is true, sometimes off centering the subject is the way to go. When it comes to macro shots, which is what I was interested in seeing with this photo, you could easily throw the thirds rule out the window and crop in tight and get up close.
