I don't care about cost of anything. I have to carry a lot of weight in my backpack. Camping gear and rock climbing gear really add up with camera stuff.

Having to carry heavier lenses and more batteries, means less food or extra strain.

Nikon did put in a patent for a 70-200 f4. Combine that with a better 16-35 in the works and I might be curious. :)

Actually you do have a cost-conscious reason in a manner of speaking...every ounce really matters with backcountry camping and you can't afford the additional weight of an f/2.8. ;) Makes good sense to me.

Cost no object?
Hire a Sherpa! ;)

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

Awesome pics Todd. Imagine how much better they would have been if you had a D800! :D

Not any better, I think. Which is why I went with the 5D3 actually. I mean the resolution increase is always good, but I was after specific things like dynamic range over ISO 3200, low light focusing, high ISO performance, etc.. All of those things are better on the 5D3 or at least on par with the D800.

Big concerns for me, are low-light focusing, Live View in the dark, long exposure artifacts (white spots) etc.. those issues coupled with me having to buy Nikon glass to compliment things, meant that there just wasn't any tangible advantages of going with the D800.

I'm pretty sure I did my due-dilligence and made the right decision. I still think the 1DX will be the ultimate body for what I do, but in the end, I was able to get 90% of what the 1DX can do, for half the price. This allowed me to add the 17 TS-E lens to my repertoire which in the end, I think is a much more lethal weapon than just a slight increase in ISO performance that the 1Dx would possibly yield.

Has anyone else considered the poor battery life of the d800?
I hear the 5d3 is worse than the 5d2, but still not as bad as the d800?

Yes, I've noticed that the battery life is a bit less on the 5D3, but then I seem to be using LV even more and with new things like the built-in level (so incredible in conjunction with TS-E lenses!) and now I've got an Eye-Fi card allowing me to view instant previews on my iPad while in the field. These things are probably contributing to my increased battery use. That said, I get my grip tomorrow and I've got 6 LP-E6 batteries, so it's not that big of a concern for me.

Or we can keep on trashing the "enemy's" system. It's both cheaper and makes us feel better about our own... :D

It's funny how personal it becomes with Nikon and Canon.

I usually care less what others shoot. I am usually just stoked to see other people with cameras, especially when they make the effort to get to the same places at crazy hours. :)

I had one guy walk up to me out in the woods. He saw my tripod and asked Nikon or Canon. I replied Canon. He then just walks off and says we're not friends. Very strange.

Good grief! It's amazing how many stupid reasons people come up with for hating others...brand-loyalty, though, has to be one of the stupidest ones.
