I am looking for some opinions on which body for low light sports, outdoor sports, and some portraits. I've never shot with either.

Thanks in advance !

1. Do you need video?
2. Do you lack long glass/can't afford the right glass for the job?

If yes to either, 7D. If else, 1DIII.

1. NO need for video.

2. See my sig for my glass, a 70-200mm f/2.8 is in the near future also.

To me the 1d3 would be the slightly better option.
The 70-200 you get will be great on it for most sports. Also you can add a1.4tc.

I have both. Nearly always low light here unfortunately. Mkiii is definately cleaner at ISO above 1600. The 7D gives you extra reach with the 1.6 crop factor and the additional megapixels. Useful for doing A3 prints.
I tend to use the mkiii for contact sports and the 7D for motor sports where I'm that bit further back from the action. The mkiii 10fps also works well with contact sports and isn't really as crucial for motorsport where the 7D's 8fps is more than adequate.

1d3 for build quality, autofocus, and fps.

1D3 is better for most things. 7D is better for video and for people who need absolute extreme reach such as bird shooters.

It would be kind to provide that information in your post when asking for help.

DP Review didn't (as far as I remember) ever do a 1D Mark III review but they did put up some direct RAW comparisons between the 7D and the 1D Mark III, in this page (external link) of their 1D Mark IV review (the lower portion, "RAW noise").

According to their page, the 1D Mark III doesn't have an ISO setting beyond 6400 (at least not a standard one). The 7D goes to 12800 (I think it has 25600 as a HI setting). The 7D's charts are significantly worse than the larger sensor cameras though.

When you take everything into account, I had a 7D for a while and was not impressed with its noise profile. If you don't need video, I would go with the 1D; larger sensor, better noise handling, FPS, more robust construction. It's a professional camera, the 7D isn't, bottom line.

had a 7D. sold it an got a MKIII. Best decision i made. some things i missed on the 7D that i now have on the 1DMKIV but must say i love everything about the MKIII. The smaller files are nice to work with, they are clean at 1600 and very usable at 3200 with some noise reduction software. i think the files look better than the 7D, by a mile.

Let's not get into that stereotyping again. The photographer makes the equipment what it is, not the equipment itself. Professionals shoot with cameras across the entire model lines of Canon. Novices shoot with the 1D series.

Also, just saying a camera is a professional camera really means nothing as a general saying. Both can be pro cameras, both can be consumer cameras. Price ends up being a bigger justifier in many cases too. ;)
