The lighting seems to be nice and soft, but that background is pretty busy. I think the fact that she has lighter clothes on causes her to blend in a little too much. Great first shoot with lights though, and you're model has the facial expressions down :).

Try to get the camera closer to eye level with the baby.

You could of also pulled her away from the background some and used a smaller depth of field. I'm sure that background with some blur would look nice. I really like the catchlights in her eyes.

In that first shot, it's almost like she's saying "turn down the lights" :)

Cute shots!

Hey. Nice first shots and great model.

Aside from the already mentioned background, my one thing to say would be the difference in color or white balance between the two. The first one looks a little cooler and the orange looks... different. Did something get cloned out of it? Or extra saturated?

Great job though and keep going!

Definitely a good start. I would pull the kid a little but forward from the background like everyone has said. Not only for the DOF change, but because if you pull the lights further from the background, it's going to make the backdrop get darker. I think this will also help a lot with your "busy" problem.

One thing I noticed(and I'm nitpick about this)- your skin tones are slightly different from image to image. How did you set the WB?

Great shots & cute kid. You might try varying the crops to get in closer, put her off center a bit, and cut out some of the BG. And you could easily selectively blur and desaturate the BG.
