As a very new owner of a 5D mark II but having owned (or still do) an Eos3 and a 30D, I am amazed at the cheap and nasty row the 5D2 shutter makes. Its more than just noisy, it could be that but still have a "high quality" ness about it. No, this is just cheap and nasty sounding.

I've never read anyone else complaining of it which makes me wonder whether this is only an issue with my copy?

What do you other owners of this camera think about yours?

I too am a very new owner of a 5D II upgrading from a 450d, and one of the things I love about it is the really nice "ka chunk" (technical term ) sound of the shutter.

get it checked out if your worried.

I was a bit hung up on the shutter sound of mine when I first got it. It didn't sound cheap, but it did sound clunky compared with 40D etc. What I think now is that the sound is solid and similar in a way to the sound of my Hasselblad shutter!

If you go to Dpreview, they have a sound sample of the shutter, so you can get a rough idea as to what it should sound like.

Mine is much quieter than the 40D, a pleasant surprise.

I forgot what a cropped sensor mirror/shutter sounded like until I bought a 7D (since sold). It reminded me of the artificial sound of my old Sony 707. What kind of toy is this ? :-)

I do recall when I went from a 40D to a 5D, the "sproingy" sound of the 5D shutter.

I was kinda hoping the 7D shutter, compared to my 450D, was going to sound and feel all slick, sexy, fast and expensive.

Was a little bit dissapointed with how clunky and sproingy it sounds/feels, but ah well, it's not that important...

Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!

It makes more of a "Ker-Lank" or a "Ker-Latter" than a "Ker-Lunk"!

"Sproingy" would be a improvement.

The 5D II shutter sound reminds me of the powerwinder on my old F1

:-) This is a funny conversation.

You're probably fine.

Richard, have you listened to other 5D2 shutter sounds for comparison? Also as mentioned, it is worth visiting Dpreview.com and listening to the sample sound file of the 5D2 shutter.

I don't want to hear anything about noisy shutters until you people have shot a Nikkormat FTn or a Nikon FG.

Haha, yes, after my 50D's noise, opening the 5DII box, charging the battery and setting up, firing one off my first thought was WTF??? I still hate it.

No, I've not had the oportunity to listen to other 5D2 shutters.

I'm surprised that the manufacturers don't spent time and money on improving how these things sound. It's such an important part of "pride of ownership".

Speaking of sound, the current nikon's shutter sound is in my opinion, way more pleasing to the ears than canon's.

P/s: Satisfying too!
