Is the 28-70 2.8L the "ducks guts" or is there an equivalent?

Hi all, i've recently upgraded my 400D to the 60D and hired the 24-70 L (other than that i only have the nifty-fifty and the standard lens kit). Whilst i am gagging with sheer delight over the vast difference in image quality, i had absolutely no idea that the lens would make my right arm fall off, closely followed by my neck!! Is there anything that is comparable in quality that doesn't weigh the same amount as, say, me?!? I'm not a pro and don't intend to become one, and only shoot my kids.
Thoughts please!

24-105 is similar but lighter.

i own the 24-70 tho, i like fast lenses. The weight is a pain in the butt but i can live with it.. its the only zoom i have and i love it

If you need 2.8, then the 17-55mm

Try the Tamron 28-75, which is constant f2.8, a fraction of the price of the Canon, and gives stellar image quality. It doesn't have USM, but it does a fine job for people photography. I've had mine for several years, and have used it a lot to photograph my daughter. It's a great lens, and can be found on the used market for around $300.

The 28-70 was discontinued in 2002 and was replaced by the 24-70 f/2.8L.

Quit wearing your strap around your neck!;)

As has been stated, a 17-55 IS 2.8 will give you comparable IQ with less weight, plus it has IS.

Another vote for Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. It's comparable to my EF 24-105L. It's lighter too. See these two threads:

Don't shoot your kids! You'll end up in "the big house"!

I initially bought the 24-105 f4 L, and was very satisfied with the results. But...indoors using available light, it's touch and go at f4. Cranking the ISO helps, though. But I really wanted some nice bokeh and the 2.8 speed, so I bought a new 24-70 last week from B&H, to get the advantage of the rebate, that they extended. My first reaction was it weighs a ton! But the indoor results thus far are worth it! I have both a hand strap and a neck strap on my camera (the neck strap goes through the hand strap on the top). So I've got the advantage I can switch back and forth as needed. But add in the flash and its external bracket to the grip and the heavy lens, my entire arm gets tired quickly. I'll have to get some barbells and do 100 reps each night, I guess!
